PROPOSAL CONDEMNED The proposal of the Auckland Automobile Racing Club Limited to install a totalisator on Henning's F-peedwav Mangere, for use during motor-car anil motor-cycle race meetings has net with strong condemnation from both the Council of Christian Congregations and the Auckland Methodist Ministers’ Association. Resolutions ot protest passed will be forwarded to the Prime Minister and the Minister of Internal Affairs. On Friday the Council of Christian Congregation passed a resolution declaring its regret at the proposal and requesting the Minister, in the interests of sport and morality, not to grant any extension of the present use of the betting machine. The Methodist ministers protested on the following grounds: will extend the present facilities tor gambling, which we hold to 'be inimical to the best interests of the community; (2) that the proposal will deprive a large section of the community of the enjoyment ot such sport; and (3) that such an extension is a contravention of the Act at present in force. The secretary of the Automobile Racing Club, Mr. T. M. V. Morton, said this morning that no definite reply had been received regarding the club's application. The Minister had the question under consideration. Even were permission granted immediately there would be no totalisator at the meeting at Mangere on Saturday next.
