CHRISTMAS MOVIES
SCREENINGS OPPOSED
There are to be no pictures screened in the Mount Eden district on Christmas Day. This was decided at a meeting of the Mount Eden Borough Council last evening, when Mr. F. L. Rendell opposed the formal application of the picture theatres in the borough.
Mr. Rendell said that lie did not think that it was right that Christmas Day should be made a day of toil for those persons who were employed in the cinemas. To allow the theatres to remain open on that day would not be catering for the public so much as providing an additional means of money-making to the proprietors. Even though an approved programme were screened that was no excuse, as it was quite easy for the management to submit a harmless selection of films. It was held by several councillors that the usual course should be followed, and that permission should be granted. On being put to the meeting, Mr. Rendell’s motion was carried.
