KILLED BY CRATE
WATERSIDE WORKER S DEATH
INQUEST OPENED
“It is only by such unfortunate accidents as these that discoveries are made which result in improvement,** said Air. F. K. Hunt, S.M., j coroner, when an inquest was held yesterday on the death of Jacintho St. Clare D*Almeida. Mr. D’ Almeida died at the Auckland Hospital at 7.10 a.m. on November 20, following an accident which occurred during the loading of the auxiliary schooner Pono on the Northern Steamship Company’s wharf about 2 p.m. on November 18. A verdict of accidental death was i returned, the cause of death being a dislocated neck. Mr. Sullivan appeared for the Waterside Workers’ Union, Air. i Cocker for the Shipping Company and Mr. Jordan for the executor of the will and the widow'. The winchman and several water-side-workers gave evidence of the aiccident. D*Almeida, who had been acting as hatchman and yard-arm mail during the loading of butter shooks, had been struck by one of a number of crates that fell from the sling above him. It was the opinion of Richard John Knaggs that there had been something wrong with the packing of the j tray on the wharf. The use of such i trays by the Northern Company had been discontinued and nets now took their place.
