Wrackler’s Omission from Auckland Cup

NOT ELIGIBLE “SO NEAR YET SO FAR" Before the race for the Alexandra Handicap at the October meeting of the Auckland Trotting Ciub, Mr. H. F. Nicoll, owner of Wrack! er. ; remarked to that he hoped his pacer would qualify for the Auckland Cup that day. After the Wrack gelding’s liandsonse victory in tho contest in question, a, large number of Auckland enthusiasts ticked him off as a big possibility for the principal event at Epsom when the Christmas carnival comes along. Many pre-post backers were prepared to "get in early" before nomination j day, so keen were they on the pros- ; • Poets of the Ashburton-owned and j j trained gelding. j But when the Cup list closed with j | secretary Mabee, Wrackler was not j ! included, not having, after all, been j | eligible for Auckland’s chief event. j I It was in a simple manner that Mr. j Nicoll missed the bus. Wrackler’s last win at the Auckland meeting was off a 4.29 mark, but he did not succeed in registering the second faster in the contest that would have placed him in tho Cup field. However, it was a foregone conclusion that when next handicapped in a two-mile heat, the crack four-year-old would be on 4.27, which under the conditions, “done or been handicapped to do,” would have secured him admission to the select circle. Wrackler was not engaged on the opening day of the Addington spring carnival, but it was generally considered that his name would appear among those handicapped on either of the remaining days. It transpires, however, that Mr. Nicolls, prior to the meeting, withdrew his pacer from all j engagements and, of course, ho was not handicapped. It looks as if his owner had forgotten his pacer was not eligible for the Auckland Cup, otherwise he would have waited to get his I mark before striking him out of the | Addington engagements. There is no ; doubt Wrackler would have added interest to the big Christmas handicap, but while he is not in that event, it is quite on the cards he will be found contesting the Summer Handicap.
