Corinax Scores and Pays Great Dividend
Takapuna Favourites Routed
THIRD favourite in the Alison Cup at Takapuna on Saturday. Corinax blew so much in the betting in the St. Andrew's Handicap yesterday that when he led all the way to score an easy win he returned a dividend of over thirty notes to his few supporters, while llipo, who chased hint home, was only a little better backed. The last win registered by Corinax was in the Auckland Cup nearly twelve months ago.
j The result of the big race was to ! a certain extent brought about by an j unfortunate mix-up at the start, in i which half a dozen horses* had their ! chances irretrievably ruined. Corinax 1 just evaded the trouble, and led all j the way, whereas there was consider- ! able interference during the running, | which he was thus able to escape. An j inquiry into this was held, but the rider actually responsible could not be discovered. Leitrim won the sprint from a depleted and none-too-strong Held, Polyxena being second, and the latter might have won with a clear passage. Refresher won the final event from a stablemate, Mithra. Hampton Park, making his first appearance, displayed promise when he led the field home in the two-year-old race, and gave a double-figure return. Duellona’s Win Duellona made no race of the Stanley Handicap, winning very easily. She was a hot favourite. On Saturday Duellona was favourite for the Takapuna Plate, but got away badly, and raced in the rear throughout, refusing to raise a gallop. After the filly had won yesterday, j an inquiry was instituted into her i form, and the information was elicited | that she caught the tapes in her j mouth on Saturday, and the jarring she received upset her. The explanaj tion was accepted, and at this decision one could scarcely cavil. S The weather was fine yesterday, and although there was heavy rain overnight, the course had rolled out splendidly. As usual, Mr. P. D. McVa.y, the secretary, had the arrangements in perfect order, and the meeting passed off without a hitch. Fields were on the small side, and several more very easy wins were registered, but that did not make the task of sorting out the winners any easier, and the favourites did not fare at all well. Yesterday the totalisator handled £33,022 10s, against £40,89S on the second day (a Saturday) of the last spring meeting, a* decrease of £7,875 10s. This drop was more than counterbalanced by the big increase on the first day. For the two days the machine handled £75,522 10s, against £68.841 10s, an increase amounting to £ 6,651. Notes on the racing, and full details of the results, follow. Vauxhall Handicap Sea Song provided one of the hottest favourites seen out. in this area for some time, carrying investments to the extent of £1,078, while the second
and third selections, Nassau Lady and Diamond Queen, the ultimate dividend payers, were entrusted with £292 and £246 respectively. Prior to the start Chesterman bolted round the course and took no part in the race, being withdrawn after the totalisator was closed. Good Idea got the worst of the start, and Loving Cup led out from a bunch, comprising Snow Plane. Luxurious. Belle Star and the favourite. At the end of a furlong. Sea Song had ranged alongside Belle Star and Loving Cup, the two leading Red Lion, Diamond Queen, Tuku, Royal Lover and Nassau Lady. As the field swept round the turn, the favourite w'as beaten and Belle Star, Nassau Lady, Loving Cup, Red Lion and Diamond Queen were all in a hand}’ position. The last-named finished full of running to beat Nassau Lady by a length, with Biddy Comet a similar distance away third. Then came Belle Star, Mon Star, Loving Cup and Luxurious. Kawau High-Weight Importer (£842) was a better favourite than Glena Bay (£734) and Wenday (£ 625). When the field settled down Waitaunaha was showing the way to Red Comet, Bizarro and Master Roley, but at the stands Red Corpet was up with the leader, while Importer and Glena Bay were tailing the field. Along the back Red Comet was in the van from Harbour View, Master Roley and Wenday, with the favourite and Glena Bay making up ground in good style. Wenday led into the straight with Master Roley in close attendance, while Golden Wedding and Glena Bay were promi-
nent. The latter put in a strong run at the distance, and got up to beat Wenday by three-quarters of a length,
with Master P.olcy a length back in third berth. Golden Wedding was fourth, followed by Quincoma, Waitaunalia and Importer. Stanley Handicap Duellona £1,262, was first choice, with good backing for Tetrachate £904 and Roman Pearl £727. Orchus began best to lead out from Roman Pearl, Duellona. Tetrachate and Lucky Alice. With three furlongs gone Tetrachate and Lucky Alice were together in the van, with Orchus and Roman Pearl on terms next, followed by Some Lady. Duellona and Gay Cockade. The favourite made a forward move at the quarter-mile post, and was first round the final bend, pursued by Lucky Alice, Tetrachate and Roman Pearl. The latter challenged in the run home, but had no chance with Duellona, who won easily by three lengths. Lucky Alice was a length away third, and then camo Tetrachate, Orchus, Some Lady and Gay Cockade. Cautley Handicap Leitrim £1,417 was the tall order in the sprint, with Polyxena £876 next in demand. Crimestor and Polyxena dwelt at the start, and the favourite shot away, followed by Macroom, but with half the journey traversed Takutama ran in behind Leitrim, while Volimond was heading Polyxena, Macroom and Crimestor. Approaching the home turn the field bunched, and Leitrim, Takutama, Polyxena and Macroom were almost in line when they straightened up for a final dash. The favourite did best to score by less than a length from Polyxena, with Macroom a length away third, followed by Takutama, Volimond and Crimestor. St. Andrew’s Handicap Prince Val £1,393 was chosen as the best of the big field, with Lady’s Boy £728 next in demand. The public were, however, sadly astray, as Corinax £IOB and Hipo £lls filled the places that gave a return. From an indifferent start, of which Eager Rose, Transformer. Prince Val, True Blood and Royal Doulton got the worst, Corinax and The Lover began smartly and led past the stands from Flying Prince, Lady’s Boy, Hipo, Briar Root and Thursby. Corinax was sailing along the back in front of his stable companion. with Briar Root. Thursby. Flying Prince, Lady’s Boy, Eager Rose. Le Choucas, Hipo, Prince Val, Flying Juliet and True Blood following in that order, Royal Doulton being last. The favourite put in a run crossing the top and at the entrance to the straight was behind Corinax, while The Lover, Royal Doulton. Lady’s Boy, Flying Prince, Le Choucas, Hipo and Hyde Park were prominent. Over • the last 100 yards the Auckland Cup winner gave nothing a chance and won easily by two lengths from Hipo, who came with a dash at the finish to cut The Lover out of second place by less than a length. Lady’s Boy was fourth and then came Royal Doulton. True Blood, Prince Val, Eager Rose. Le Choucas, Flying Prince, Flying Juliet and Hyde Park. The winner paid nearly a third of a century and Hipo nearly double figures. Rakino Handicap All saddled up for the two-year-old race, Orapai, £1,279, and Sight Draft. £723, being the elect of backers, but ‘ the winenr turned up in a promising sort in Hampton Park, £2Ol, who i gave a double-figure return. Caviare dwelt at the barrier, Biddy’s Boy . going out fast from Sight Draft, Thes- £ pis, Orapai, Full Measure, Bells of Shandon, and Hampton Park. At the three furlongs Biddy’s Boy was just ]
clear of Sight Draft, Thespis, Orapai. Hampton Park, Tremetus, Bells of Shandon. and Full Measure. Approaching the home stretch, Hampton Park moved up, and was close to Biddy’s Boy at the turn, with Sight Draft. Thespis, Orapai, and Bells of Shandon. Jn the run to the jLidge Biddy’s Boy quickly compounded, and Hampton Park and Sight Draft had the finish to themselves, the former coming again at the finish and winning by a neck. Biddy’s Boy was a length and a-half back third, and Wild Time fourth, next in order being Caviare, Thespis, Orapai, Tremetus,
i Eiolls of Shandon, and Oil King, Full i Measure being last. Pupuke Hack Handicap It was not a strong field that contested this race, and consequently Vail, £1,496, was installed a very hot l favourite over Cybele, £698, and Good , Boy, £459. Cybele was last to leave tlio peg, Terrapeen leading out of the ’ straight from Good Boy, Brampton, 1 Vali, Dark Prince, Micrometer, Alloy, . and Cybele. At the five furlongs , Terrapeen and Brampton were out in , front of Good Boy, Micrometer, Dark Prince, Vali, and Cybele. At the two ■ furlongs Terrapeen retired, Brampton turning for home with Micrometer, just behind them being Good Boy apd Vali. with good gap back to Alloy and , Cybel-e. It was a good finish. Good ' Boy finishing too strongly for Vali, and winning by three parts of a length, with the unlucky Micrometer a length and a-half back. Brampton was fourth, and Alloy, Cybele, Dark Prince, and Terrapeen followed at intervals. Ngataringa Handicap Backers plumped very solidly for Refresher, £1,677, in the concluding race, the Ngataringa Handicap, while his stable companion, Mithra, was entrusted with £695, and they paid the dividends. Refresher led out from Lucy Rose, Mithra, Town Bird, Gemlight, Storm Fiend, and Respirator. At the five furlongs Town Bird had run to th efront from Refresher, Gemlight, Mithra, Stqrm Fiend, Lucy Rose, and Respirator. The leader weakened two furlongs from home, and Refresher led into the straight from Town Bird. Gemlight, Mithra, Lucy Rose, and Storm Fiend and Respirator. Once in line, Refresher drew out, and won comfortably by a couple of lengths from Mithra, the latter being a neck ahead of Gemlight, who weakened in the last couple of chains. Respirator was fourth, and Lucy Rose, Town Bird, Storm Fiend, and Master Doon crossed the line in that order. Following are the results:-*— VAUXHALL HANDICAP Of £250; 7 fur. 3 — DIAMOND QUEEN (J.
