VICTORIAN ELECTION
INDEPENDENTS HOLD BALANCE
LABOUR GAINS TWO SEATS MELBOURNE, Sunday. The Victorian State elections were held yesterday, when 109 candidates stood for the 45 seats that were contested. Twenty members had previously been returned unopposed. The returns are not complete, but the present state of the parties, with that at the dissolution of Parliament ia parentheses, appears to be as follows; Labour. 30 (28). Nationalist, IS (20). Country Party, 14 (14). Independent, 3 (3). The three party leaders. Sir William McPherson (Nationalist. Hawthorn), Hon. E. J. Hogan (Labour, Grenville) and Hon. John Allan (Country Party, Rodney) are apparently well ahead. However, Mr. Frank Groves (Nationalist, Dandenong), formerly Minister of Railways, and Mr. R. M. Cuthbertson (Nationalist, Albert Park), formerly an honorary Minister, are In precarious positions. Although the Labour opposition has named two seats, the net result of the election seems to be a stalemate, as neither Labour nor the NationalistCountry Party fusion will be able to hold office without the support of the Independents, who are considered to be unstable in this regard.
