BEACH RACE MEETING

MANY CLOSE FINISHES High speeds marked the handier beach race meeting of the North Sho Sports and Motor-cycle Club at Orev yesterday, riders checking in at nearly 90 miles an hour. There were no serious mishaps. The beach was wet in the early part of the meeting, but dried well later. Exceptionally large fields faced the starter, and finishes were close through excellent handicapping. A feature of the meeting' was the fast times put up by women competitors. A large number made the trip from the city. Results: 250 C.C. HANDICAP. Open. Four miles; seven turns. Miss Rowe (Ariel) 1 C. Walker (Velocette) .. .. 2 J. Parker (Velocette) 3 Won by half a mile, 50yds between second and third. Time, 6min 35sec. The winner lad a handicap lead of more than half i. lap on the scratch men. At the end of the second lap S. Brookes (Velocette), from scratch, had come lo the front, but his foot missed the brake and was jammed by the sand hard against the footrest, badly spraining the ankle. Miss Rowe kept up the pace to win easily. 350 C.C. HANDICAP, Open. Eight miles; seven turns. A. Bowler (Velocette), lOsec .. 1 Butler (Rex Acme), lOsec .. 2 Smith (Rex Acme), lOsec. .. 3 Won by more than half a mile. Time 9min 25sec. Thirteen starters faced the pistol, the two women competitors being sent away first. Miss Brier ley (New Imperial) led at the end of the second mile from Miss Appleyard (New Imperial), with H. Wood (8.5. A.) handy. Myers (Velncette), from fourth place, had come to the front at the end of the next lap. Bowler was second, with Butler clo.~e behind. Bowler and Myers changed places during the next two miles, but the latter's engine failed, putting Bugler into second place, with Smith next. WOMEN’S HANDICAP Four miles; seven turns. Miss V. Mrs. Penny (Raleigh) went away first, but at the end of the first lap Miss Appleyard had taken the lead, followed by Miss Matthews.
