FURROWED BROWS
DECEMBER TESTS BEGIN
MATRICULATION CANDIDATES Excluding junior clerks and traffic officers, there are 1,041 possessors of furrowed brows today in Auckland. In halls in the University College and in secondary schools, the 192 b 1 matriculation examinations were begun. Furrows will not disappear , from the brows of the thousand or so candidates until the evening of Wed- : nesday, December 11, when the strain of the examinations will end; on the other hand, if Aloysius, of Parnell : and Margaret, of Grey Lynn, are not at all satisfied with their handling of the algebra paper, they will possess furrowed brows until the results of the examinations are given out in the 1 New Year. There are exactly nine more candidates in the December examinations this year than there were last year. Entrance examinations have 840 candi- , dates: entrance scholarships, 54; accountants’ preliminary tests, 144; and three students are being examined for 1 the Diploma of Fine Arts. The impression gained from the main examination hall in the University College this morning was one of enormous industry. Rows of candidates, with one accord, were attacking question papers vigorously. They were formulating answers for questions on economics and civics. The same atmosphere of concentration can be seen today in the subcentres to the University College. Candidates, during the course of the examinations, will sit in Scots Hall. Auckland, Mount Albert and Takapuna Grammar Schools. King’s College. Sacred Heart College, Auckland and Epsom Girls’ Grammar Schools. Seventy centres are required as examination places throughout the Dominion. The Revs. P. S. Smallfield and A. J. Greenwood are the supervisors in the city district. Over 30 assistants have been appointed to the work.
