CENTENARY COMMEMORATED
SERVICE HELD AT TAURANGA \ Press Association TAURANGA, Today. The centenary of the arrival in New Zealand of Archdeacon Alfred Nesbit Brown was commemorated yesterday by a service at “The Elms,” now the home of the Misses Maxwell, but formerly the old mission chapel. The old mission bell was rung again for the first time in many years. The service was conducted by Archdeacon Chatterton, of Rotorua, assisted by the Rev. Mr. Hall, vicar of Tauranga, and the Rev. Mr. Tumalalii, "the Rev. Mr. Wikiriwhi and the Rev. Mr. Tikao. A large number of residents were present, including several old settlers who attended the mission chapel before any other church existed* here. A boisterous wind and rough sea prevented the attendance of a Maori choir from across the harbour, but a number of natives present were ad 1 dressed by tile Rev. Mr. Tikao. The bell was tolled by Mr. C. J. Tunks, an old Tauranga resident, now resident in Auckland, and tho Maori chief Reahau Piahana. A brief and inspiring address was given by Archdeacon Chattertou.
MANGERE METHODISTS
OPENING OF NEW HALL
The Rev. Dr. Laws, 8.A., Principal of the Trinity College, Auckland, was the principal speaker at the opening services at the Mangere East Methodist School Hall yesterday afternoon and evening. The large attendance at both services included visitors from Otahuhu and Papatoetoe.
ST. DAVID’S SUNDAY SCHOOL
ANNIVERSARY SERVICES
The St. David's Presbyterian Sunday School celebrated its anniversary yesterday with special services. Large congregations were present at the morning, afternoon and evening services. In the morning the Rev. Lionel B. Fletcher gave a special message to the children in an address on “Grow in Grace.” Several speciallychosen hymns were sung by Sunday School children under Mr. G. S. Baker, and a sacred solo was given by Miss Matthews.
The singing in the afternoon was led by the children of the Virginia Avenue branch school. under the. leadership of Mr. J. Hinkley, while Miss R. Geddes sang a sacred solo. The Rev. George Jackson preached from the text, “Where Your Pleasure Is, There Will Your Heart Be Also.” The Rev. D. C. Herron was the preacher at the evening service, taking as his text, ‘‘Of the Residue He Maketh a God.” He emphasised the urgent call for young men and women to lend their aid in stopping the | breakaway toward pleasure and materialism. Miss Marjorie Craston sang a solo.
ADVENT SUNDAY
SERVICES AT ST. PAUL’S
Services appropriate to the first Sunday in Advent were held yesterday in St. Paul’s Anglican Church, City, At the solemn Eucharist celebrant and preacher was the vicar, the Rev. Cecil Watson.
The evening service was conducted by the vicar. The preacher was Canon H. K. Archdall. The day was marked by a full procession at both the morning and evening services. Tile anthem “Blessed Be the God and Father” was sung by the choir, under Dr. Thotitas.
