Easy Winners

TAICAPUNA’S OPENING DAY

Prodice at Her Best

NOT for years have There been so many easy winners as were seen at Takapuna on Saturday. The distance >etween the winner and the second horse in five out ot to eight races ranged from two lengths to e lengths. 01 all this the racing was interesting, and marked a sueeessin opening of the Takapuna Jockey Clubs spring meeting.

There -were some good performances registered throughout the day, the most notable perhaps being the success scored by Prodice in the Alison Cup. This revealed the brilliant daughter of Catmint at her best, for she was never in danger of defeat at any part of the contest. Prodice stuck on exceedingly wen, but it is too early to say that she will be able to stay the Auckland Cup journey. The Lover and Le Choucas fought out the minor placings determinedly. the former finishing second. I-le is In good fettle. Prince Val was another that impressed. He was not among the best beginners in the Borough Handicap, but 110 led over the final 'three furlongs, and won most convincingly. Flying Prince and Hager Rose chased him home. Won As She Liked Lady Quex had no difficulty in settling the opposition in the open sprint, winning with ridiculous ease from Lucy Rose and Town Bird. There was an exciting finish in the Takapuna Plate, Leitrim being a bit fortunate in accounting for Vali, the latter not having a good was an interesting race between Gray and Goldfinch. Tremetus Avon the two-yea.r-old race by a determined effort over the last bit, Orapai and Wild Time filling the other places. There were no mishaps, if one excepts the peculiar experiences of the Southern light-weight, A. H. EastAvood, Avho Avas making liis first appearance on this course. He Avas unseated from Refresher at the start of the Borough Handicap, and in the next race Le Choucas unseated him in front of the croAA'ded stand while going out to do his preliminary. The day's racing was excellently managed, the secretary, Mr. F. D. McVay, and his executive, having everything in order. The attendance Avas good, and the course, although a bit slow, had made a good .recovery from the heavy rain throughout the week. Speculation was brisk, the machine handling £42,500. against £27,943 10s, an increase of £14,556 10s. The first day last year, however, was on a Friday. Details of the racing and results are appended: Melrose Maiden Clopton (£423) was a slightly better favourite than Sea Song (£404), Avhile Alloy (£336) was best backed of the remainder. Biddy’s Comet got the worst of the start. LoVing Cup, from a handy rail position, being first out from Neil, Greenfield. Sea Song, Nassau Lady, and Alloy, the favourite being in the next bunch. With two furlongs covered, Sea Song went to the lead, her nearest attendants being Loving Cup, Tuku, Neil. Clopton, Greenfield, Nassau Lady, Biddy’s Comet aud Dark Prince, but crossing the top Nassau Lady and Greenfield AA'ere handy to the leading division. Sea Song was clear at the home turn from Tuku, Loving Cup, Nassau Lady, Neil, Carlaris and Mon Star, Avith Alloy av ell back heading a bunch, but in the run to the box the leader came away, to win easily by four lengths from Nassau Lady, who was threequarters of a length in front of Mon Star. Neil was fourth, and then followed Tuku. Alloy, Loving Cup, Dark Prince, Clopton, Greenfield, Cupola and Biddy’s Comet. Tiri High-Weight There Avas a big “show down” in the Higli-Weiglit Handicap, when Kairuri, Avho was having his first run in public, and carrying only £73 strolled home to pay close on a third of a century. Sir Archie £B4O and Golden Wedding £694 Avere most fancied, with good support for Wenday £626. When the field settled down, Waitaunaha was showing the way past the stand from Harbour View, Bizarro, Red Comet and Kairuri, but entering the back stretch Red Comet assumed command, being followed by Bizarro, Sir Archie, Quincoma and Kairuri. Passing the halfmile peg, Glena Bay made a fine rush on the outer and was at the head of affairs crossing the top, Avith the outsider, Kairuri moving up fast. The latter was just in front of Glena Bay at the home bend, Avith Wenday and

Quincoma also in the picture. In the run to the judge Kairuri had it on the opposition, and won nicely by two lengths from Wenday, A\ r ho beat Glena Bay by half that distance for second berth. The fa\*ourite was fourth, and then came Golden Wedding. Quincoma, Red Day, Harbour View and Bizarro. Borough Handicap Prince Val £1,272 was a good favourite over Refresher £903 and Eager Rose £519. Refresher, who drew the rails, lost his rider at the start, and Liaison hopped away quickly, being followed by Flying Prince. Eager Rose, Mithra, Respirator. Gemlight, Thursby, Prince Val, Cynthia N.. and Hipo, Royal Doulton and Mac-worn getting away badly. At the half-mile, Liaison Avas still in the van, her nearest attendants being Cynthia N., Respirator, Eager Rose, Prince Val, Gemlight, Macroom, Flying Prince, Hipo, Royal Doulton, Thursby, Tanagra and Mithra, and here Liaison Avas pulled up bleeding badly. The favourite moved up crossing the top and showed the way round the turn to Refresher, Flying Prince, Eager Rose, Thursby, Gemlight and Hipo. At the distance Prince Val drew right away and passed the winning post five lengths clear of Flying Prince, with Eager Rose a length and a-half away third. Then followed Respirator, Thursby, Hipo, Macroom, Royal Doulton. Tanagra, Gemlight, Mithra and Cynthia N. Alison Cup Prodice, £1,892, Avas a Avarm fancy, with Iri the Shade, £1,103, next in order, while The Lover, who ultimately finished second, at a good price, carried £371.

Th© I.over was first out from the favourite, who drew the rails, with Corinax. Flying Juliet. I.e Choucas and True Blood next in order. As the liehl swept out of the straight. The Lover was in front from Flying Juliet. ITodiee, Le Choucas, Corinax, True Blood and Transformer, and there was little change along the back. Crossing the top Le Choucas ran up to the leaders, and Flying Juliet began 10 drop bacK. AA'hilo Prodice Avas going smoothly. The latter came on the outside at the turn for home, where she was beside The Lover and Le Choucas. Avith Transformer. True Blood. In the tShade. Corinax and Flying Juliet following. Once straightened up Prodiee gave nothing a chance, to win by four lengths from The Lover, Avho was three parts of a length in front of Le Choucas. True Blood Avas next to arrive, followed by Transformer. In the Shade, Flying Juliet, with Corinax last. Cambria Handicap Sight Draft £1,451 Avas the public fancy, with good backing for Orapai £1,230. The winner turned tip in Tremetus (bracketed with Thespis), which carried £3ll. Tremetus. on the fence, began best to slioaa* the way to Orapai. Full Pleasure. Caviare, Sight Draft. Oil King and Biddy’s Boy. At the three-furlong post Full Measure took charge, being followed by Orapai. Biddy's Boy. Tremetus, Bells of Shandon and Wild Time. Orapai Avas in the van Avhen they turned for the judge. Full Measure. Biddy’s Boy. Tremetus.Sight Draft and Wild Time being in good positions. Tremetus finished determinedly to get up and snatch a neck victory from Orapai. with Wild Time two lengths back third. Biddy’s Boy. who stopped in the final rush, was fourth, and then came Bells of Shandon. Sight Draft,

Full Measure, Thespis, Oil King and Caviare, Avith Great Emblem and King Ford the last two. Takapuna Plate Leitrim £1,524, Duellona £1,30S and Vali £915 were best supported, and' the favourite was first to show up at the start, followed by Storm Flencr, Good Boy, Crimesto'r, and Vali, while Duellona Ava.s slow to move, and she ran in the rear throughout, refusing to raise a gallop. At the five furlongs Crimestor ran to the head of affairs, and was attended by Leitrim. BeJle Stai\ Volimond, Vali. Arihana. Lucky Alice, Storm Fiend, and Briar Root. The last-named dashed up crossing the top, and was on terms with Leitrim at the home turn, AA'ith Tetrachate, Vali, Crimestor, Storm Fiend and Belle Star in the picture. Inside the distance Leitrim was clear, but Vali came at him strongly, and in a hard finish Leitrim won by half a head, with Briar Root two and a-half lengths away third. Next to cross the line were Tetrachate, Storm Fiend. Prince of Orange, Good Boy, Arihana, Bell Star. Crimestor, Lucky Alice and Micrometer. Ponui Handicap Taurua £1,932 was a hot favourite and the colt was unlucky in getting beaten into second place. Sports King £633 was the best backed of the other runners, the eventual winner. Spring Abbey, carrying £484. Tarrapeen began quickly and showed the Avay to Diamond Queen, Red Lion. Spring Abbey, Orchus, Taurua, Carmint and Brampton out of the straight. Along the back Diamond Queen went to the lead from Orchus, Terrapeen, Red Lion, Gay Cockade. Taurua and Spi'ing Abbey, but the favourite moved up crossing the top. Turning for home Diamond Queen had a slight call over Orchus, Sports King. Gay Cockade, Cybele, Taurua and Spring Abbey in a bunch close up. Spring Abbey \vas in front at the half distance, and in the meantime Taurua Avas trying to get through. He found an opening and Avas fast cutting doAvn Spring Abbey, but the post Avas too near and the favourite Avent under by a short head. Cybele was half a length off in third berth, and then came Gay Cockade (right up), Brampton, Diamond Queen, Sports King, Orchus, Red Lion, Carmint and Terrapeen. Cheltenham Handicap

Lady Quex £2,062 and Vallar £ 1,800 monopolised the betting, Avhile Lucy Rose, who finished second, Avas en- j trusted with £579. Lucy Rose was first aAvav, followed by Town Bird, Ridgemount, Takutama, and Lady Quex, but with half the distance covered ToAvn Bird went to the front with Ridgemount in close attendance, and Tea Time, Vallar, Ludy Quex, Lucy Rose and Takutama folloAving. Approaching the home turn, 11. Gray brought the favourite up on the outside with a timely run and she led round the corner from Ridgemount, ToAA'n Bird, Lucy Rose and Vallar. The favourite had the field at her mercy in the race to the box and won by three lengths from Lucy Rose, who was two lengths in front of Toavh Bird. Ridgemount Avas next, followed by Vallar, Takutama and Tea Time.
