Rabbi Scores Easily in Feilding Cup

THE RAIDER’S SPRINT

PAGANELLI’S FAILURE Special to THE SUN FEILDING, Saturday. With that good horse Rabbi keeping on winning, his owner must be regretting more than ever that he missed the nomi nations for the Auckland Cup. The Paladin gelding had little difficulty in wining the Feilding Jubilee Cup. Although the day was fine for the opening of the Feilding Jubilee meeting. the course was soft as a result of recent heavy rains. The gathering was large and enthusiastic, and the machine receipts, which totalled £27,258, were =£6,901 in advance of those of the first day last year. Waituna Hurdles In the Waituna Hurdles, Horomea (£437) wound up a shade better favourite than Elysianor (£403), with a substantial drop to Beaumont (£344). Elysianor was actually first away from lied Bank and Delude, but Hard Gold and Delude worked to the front to pilot Red Bank and Elysianor through the straight, with Horomea leading Atareria, Beaumont and- Novar, who were racing at intervals. At the five furlongs fence Hard Gold. Delude, Red Bank and Horomea rose together, with Elysianor in behind; hut Red Bank and Hard Gold again forged to the front and the pair led Elysianor and Horomea into the straight. However, Elysianor immediately ran past the leaders, with Horomea in pursuit, anti the former had to be shaken up to stall off a late challenge by Horomea, there being but a head between them at the post. Hard Gold was third four lengths back, with Atariria and Red Bank together. Beaumont ran disappointingly and was a long way back. Elysianor had a bit in hand at the finish, and probable improvers are Red Bank and Horomea. Aorangi Trial . False Scent let backers down in the Aorangi Trial Plate, for which he was sent out a firm favourite. Leisure was taken to the front at barrier rise in company with Black Acre. Pedestal and False Scent ahead of Statuary. There was little change crossing the top, although approaching the straight entrance Statuary and Pari improved their positions and were attending Leisure when heads were straightened out for home. Statuary assumed the lead inside the distance, but he had to be kept hard at it to beat Leisure by a head. Pari was three lengths back, with a gap to Four Acres and Lady Gen, with the favourite next. The Cup The Cup was a great race all the way. Rabbi (£812) was a firm favourite from the bracketed pair, Vertigern and Talisker (£498). with Panther (£458) also the medium of strong support in a. heavy betting market Teri and Merry Mint were taken to the front passing through the straight, with Panther, Piuthair, Keddar and Joy Bird next in order. Running down

the back Teri drew clear of Merry Mint, with Panther, Keddar, Talisker, Piuthair, Rabbi, Joy Bird, Vertigern, and Blimp at intervals, the last-named being boxed in on the rails. Keddar joined Teri crossing the top, with Rabbi, Ruanui. Merry Damon, Shrewd, Panther and Talisker all within striking distance. Landed into the straight Rabbi drew to the front from Ruanui, Teri, Piuthair, Shrewd and Blimp, Hie favourite being untroubled therefrom to win nicely by a length and a-half from ShreNvd, who finished strongly to cut Ruanui out of second money. Then in a heap came Bright Glow, Talisker, Teri, Merry Damon, Blimp and Merry Mint. Ruanui found the distance just too far. Shrewd should soon win a good race. Blimp was unlucky at the start, and Merry Damon went well, but Piuthair could not act in the ground. Feilding Stakes The Feilding Stakes produced another surprise. Paganelli (£1,268) was backed down to odds on, though there was fair support for Ceremony (£769), with a substantial drop to Cimabue (£256). lvaihoro jumped our smartly to lead Paganelli and Arrow Zone to the turn, where Ceremony ran up into second position. But before the straight was reached Paga - nelli ran in behind and backers were feeling on good terms with themselves. However, when asked to improve his position the favourite failed to respond, whereas Cimabue came up to join Kailioro and went on to win nicely by a length and a-half, with Paganelli a similar distance back. Princess Betty was fourth, with Arrow Zone and Ceremony next. Arisus. who had been chopped out at the start, being a bad last. After an inquiry, L. G. Morris, rider of Cimabue, was cautioned for interfering with Paganelli, and R. S. Bagby. rider of Paganelli, was cautioned for giving unsatisfactory evidence. Paganelli found the wet course against him. Kowhai Hack In the Kowhai Hack Handicap Masher £739) was favourite from Make Up (£530) and My Own (£350). My Own showed the way out of the barrier, but Goldlike ran to the front rn pilot Don Quixote, My Own, Chopin, Skyrider, Masher and Democratic along the back, the last-named having worked forward into a good position after being somewhat slow in getting away. The positions underwent a change crossing the top. although Goldlike was still in the van, with Latakia, My Own. Chopin, Democratic and Masher all ahead of Make Up. However, approaching the distance Make L T p joined the leaders and a close

finish saw Make E'p .snatch the honours from Chopin by a head, with Democratic but another head away. There was a short gap to My Own. with Latakia, Limosa. Masher and Goldlike next to finish. Latakia did not see the journey out and Chopin was a bit unlucky, but Make Up's win was full of merit. Flying Handicap The bracketed pair, Silver Paper and Aspiring, were favourites for the Flying Handicap from The Raider (£692) and Arrow Lad (£442), but they were fated to be astray. The Raider dashed to the front when the tapes lifted, but gave way to Banket at the turn, with First Money, Llanore, Gold Dawn and Aspiring at intervals, the last-named’s companion, Silver Paper, having got away slowly. Once landed into the straight The Raider ran to the front, with Llanore and Gold Dawn in pursuit, but inside the distance Gold Cure came through on the rails and Arrow Lad wide out. and Gold Cure got to within a length of The Raider and half a length in advance of Llanore at the post. Arrow Lad was fourth. and Gold Dawn. Goshawk and Silver Paper next to pass the post. History repeated itself, for The Raider won the event last year. He gave nothing much of a chance once he was headed for home. Gold Cure’s finishing effort, was good, and Arrow Lad was more impressive than he was at Riccart’on. Llanore and Gold Dawn will do better soon. Fitzroy Handicap Just So bolted prior to the Fitzroy Hack Handicap, and was withdrawn from the contest. Limosin (£893) was backed down to a very short price, Knightlike (£417) and Marica (£415) both being pjreferred to Clever (£410). Clarendon delayed the start owing to his refusing to get up into line, but the field was eventually sent away in a fair line, Clever going to the front in company with Paiko, Knightlike, Cuticle, Rule Britannia. Limosin and Werata. Knightlike had moved in behind Clever approaching the straight entrance, with Limosin and Sylvan Dell close up, but the favourite could not overhaul Clever in the run home, the Psychology filly hanging on to win by a length, with Cuticle three lengths behind Limosin. Then came Knightlike, Marica, Clarendon and .Rule Britannia. Clever won well, but Limosin ran round everything and was unlucky He needs a strong rider. Knightlike should not he long. Kiwitea Handicap

In the Kiwitea Handicap Otairi . (£1.275) wound up favourite from High Falutin’ (£1,041). with a drop thereafter to Juggle and King Midas. King Midas was actually first away, but first Juggle and then Borsalene went into the van, the latter piloting Juggle, ' Melissa, King Midas and Manly past the five-furlong post, both Otairi and High Falutin’ being in the rear. Bor* salene threatened to retain his posi- . tion at the straight entrance, but r when in line for home Juggle ran to the front, although he had to be shaken , up to stall off a late challenge from Otairi, who came through on the rails : to get to within half a length of L Juggle, with Melissa a length away. [ Then came King Midas, Borsalene and the favourite. [ The victory of Juggle proved highly popular, for he is the property of the donor of the Jubilee Cup trophies, i Following are the results: Waituna Hurdles, of £200; 1:2 miles.— 4 2 Elysianor, 11.9 (W.
