FIRST HEAT TO DIAMOND QUEEN
IX fine weather and before a large attendance, the Takapuna Jockey Club’s spring fixture reached finality today at North Shore. Despite heavy showers of the early morning, the track was in good order. Backers received a rude shock in the opening event, when a “screaming” hot fancy in Sea Song failed badly. Diamond Queen and Nassau Lady, who filled the places, paid useful prices.

Won by a. length, similar distance between second and third. Time, 1.33 Sea Song provided one of the hottest favourites i seen out in this area foi* some time, carrying investments to the extent of £1,078, while the second and third selections, Nassau Lady and Diamond Queen, the ultimate dividend payers, were entrusted with £292 and £246 respectively. Prior to the start Chesterman bolted round the course and took no part in the race. Good. Idea got the worst of the start, and Loving Cup led out from a bunch, comprising Snow Plane, Luxurious, Belle Star and the favourite. At the end of a furlong, Sea Song had ranged alongside Belle Star and Loving Cup, I the two leading Red Lion, Diamond. Queen. Tuku, Royal Lover and Nassau Lady. As the field swept round the turn, the favourite was beaten and Belle Star, Nassau Lady, Loving Cup, Red Lion and Diamond Queen were all in a handy position. The last-named finished full of running to beat Nassau Lady by a length, with Biddy Comet a similar distance away third. Then came Belle Star, Mon Star, Loving Cup and Luxurious. Won by three-quarters of a length, third horse a length away. Time, 2.31 3-5. Importer (£842) was a better favourite than Glena Bay (£734) and Wenday (£625). When the field settled down Waitaunaha was showing the way to Red Comet, Bizarro and Master Roley, but at the stands Red Comet was up with the leader, while Importer and Glena Bay were tailing the field. Along the back Red Comet was in the van from Harbour View, Master Roley and Wenday, with the favourite and Glena Bay making up ground in good style. Wenday led into the straight with Master Roley in close attendance, while Golden Wedding and Glena Bay were prominent. The latter put in a strong run at the distance, and got Lip to beat Wenday by three-quarters of a length, with Master Roley a length back in third berth. Golden Wedding was fourth, followed by Quincoma, Waitaunaha and Importer.

Winner trained by J. .McLaughlin, Trentham. Won by three lengths, third horse a length away. Time, 1.32. Duellona £1,262. was first choice, with good backing for Tetrachate £904 and Roman Pearl £727. Orchus began best to lead out from Roman Pearl, Duellona, Tetrachate and Lucky Alice. With three furlongs gone Tetrachate and Lucky Alice were together in the van, with Orchus and Roman Pearl on terms next, followed by Some Lady, Duellona and Gay Cockade. The favourite made a forward move at the quarter-mile post, and was first round the final bend, pursued by Lucky Alice, Tetrachate and Roman Pearl. The latter challenged in the run home, but had no chance with 'Duellona, Who won easily by three lengths. Lucky Alice was a length away third, and then came Tetrachate, Orchus, Some Lady and Gay Cockade. An Inquiry An inquiry was held into the running of Duellona, compared with her first
day’s form. The explanation of Ducllona’s connections was accepted as satisfactory, and no action taken. CAUTLEY HANDICAP Of £350; 6 furlongs I—LEITRIM (Geo. Cook, Te AwaWOll by three-quarters of a length, third horse a length away. Time, 1.16 Leitrim £1.417 was the tall order in the sprint, with Polyxena £876 next in demand. Crimestor and Polyxena were slow to move, and the favourite shot away, followed by Macroom, but with half the journey traversed Taku Tama ran in behind Leitrim, while Volimond was heading Polyxena. Macroom and Crimestor. Approaching the home turn the field bunched, and Leitrim. Taku Tama, Volimond. Polyxena and Macroom were all in line when they straightened up for a final dash. The favourite did best to score by less than a length from Polyxena! with Macroom a length away third, followed by Taku Tama, Volimond and Crimestor.
