WILSON’S STUTZ DOES FASTEST LAP
SATURDAY’S HANDICAPS
Further trials at the Mangere Speedway in preparation for next Saturday, the opening day of the Auckland Aut'o mobile Racing Club’s season, were held yesterday. A number of Auckland’s fastest cars, including Wilson’s Stutz, Wraight’s Chrysler and some speedy newcomers to the motor racing fold, provided a fair attendance of enthusiasts with an abundance of thrills.
A FTER the heavy rains the inside of the track was too soft for high speeds and ajthough some of the cars lapped, hugging the "rails,” officials found it necessary, for the preservation of the course, to rope off the inner track later in the trials.
The outstanding performance of the day was that by Wilson’s Stutz, piloted by Rex Grierson, who lapped in G7sec. This machine which has made its mark in beach racing shows considerable promise of heading the list on the track. Wraight’s Chrysler with Tim Bell at the wheel, managed 67 1-5 and it is perhaps surprising that this machine is going off the back mark with the Stutz in the big events next Saturday. Sutherland's Special lapped in 72see, but is certainly capable of a faster time, while the Canadian Knight and Whippet Company’s Whippet driven by Crocombe, lapped consistently in 72sec. Other times recorded were: Payne’s Chevrolet, 1.24; George Campbell’s Mercer, 1.15, and George Smith in his Special, I.lssec. The super-charged Austin 7, announced in The Sun last week as one of the newcomers to the sport, was also seen at the track with Phil Seabrook at the wheel. This machine appears a very likely one, but neither the handicappers nor enthusiasts have had the pleasure of seeing it lap at anything approaching its best.
Intermingled in the car racing events will be four motor-cycle tests, for which big entries have been received. Percy Coleman, one of New Zealand’s foremost riders, will compete. The drivers, cars and handicaps as announced by Mr. IT. J. Butcher are as follow: SPEEDWAY HANDICAP (Eight Laps). Grierson, Stutz, scr.; Wraight, Chrysler, scr.; Paul.
