STRUGGLE IN NEWTON 4, Had it not been for Mr. Miller, who willingly came to the rescue, the constable would probably have had a bad time, as the large crowd looking on was not exactly friendly to the police.” SjO Sub-Inspector McCarthy at the Police Court this morning expressed appreciation of the manner in which a civilian had come to the rescue of a consiable who was having some difficulty with an unruly prisoner in Karangahape Hoad on Saturday evening. “Yes,” agreed Mr. F. K. Hunt S.M. “Thanks are due to him.” James Cripp, a steel-worker aged 37, was charged with being disorderly while drunk in Karangahape Hoad and resisting Constable Gawlcr in the execution of his duty. He pleaded guilty. The time of the offence was given by the sub-inspector as shortly before six o’clock in the evening. Cripp had tried to mount a tram. The chain wa* clown and the tram full, but. in spite of a warning from the conductor, he persisted in trying to get on until r he constable had to be called. Then the trouble had started. “Cripp seemed to think he was a pugilist of some repute and wanted to light all and sundry.” added the sub-inspector. Cripp was fined £ 1 in default three days* imprisonment on the first charge. For resisting arrest he was fined £2 in default seven days’ imprisonment. He was also ordered to pay witnesses’ expenses amounting to 30s.
