ST. ANDREW’S NIGHT
CONCERT AT ONEHUNGA
St. Andrew's Night was celebrated by an enjoyable Scottish national concert, held in the Presbyterian Hall, Onehunga, on Saturday evening. Prior to the concert, the Auckland and Suburban Highland Pipe Band played a variety of pibrochs and strathspeys in Queen Street. A feature of the entertainment was an address on Scottish humour by Mr. J. W. Shaw, M.A., who by numerous amusing anecdotes, proceeded to demonstrate that the Scottish race wns the most humorous in the world. He said that by the establishment of a national joke factory. Aberdeen liod been placed prominently on the map. and the demand for the factory’s output was so great that it was no* working overtime. He denied th T the Scot was a mean man, and stated that in any public subscription li? 1 for the common good Scottish names were always prominent. Scotland had always been a poor country, where life was hard, and its people km* and appreciated the value of money but their natural thriftiness should not be mistaken for meanness. The Rev. D. D. Scot., in thankins the artists and promoters, said that the concert—the proceeds from which were to be given to the church improvement fund—had been organised on consistently Scottish lines, in that it had been held entirely free of expense. The programme consisted of following items:—Scottish medley. Mr?F- J. Bilton and Dr. J. Kirkwood: Scots Wha Hae” and ”Wi’ a Hundred Pipers,” the Royal Oak QuarteT. "Morag’s Faery Glen” and "The Bonnie Briar Bush,” Airs. John Craig L.A.8.. L.T.C.L.: “John Grumble” and “The Keel Row.” Alesdamcs J. Mitchell and A. W. Wyness: “Alary of Argyll’ and “Afton Water/* Air. John McDougall: The Star of Robbie Burns" and "Scotland Yet,” Air. AlcConochie: "The Road to the Isles.” Airs. A TNyness; “Angus Alacdonald.” Mrs. Rattray. Mrs. J. K. Green played t> accompaniments. A group of girl* from Auckland gave a line exhibition of Highland dancing. Air. K. J. Cowell acted as sta?e manager.
