TIMARU CONVENT’S JUBILEE
NUNS’ GREAT LIFE WORK Pres* Association TIMARU, Thursday. Services celebrating the golden jubilee of the Sacred Heart convent were held today, and were attended by leaders of the Roman Catholic Church in New Zealand. There were several present who attended the ceremony of laying the foundation-stone 50 years ago, notably Archbishop Redwood, who performed the ceremony. A striking tribute was paid to the great work the nuns had accomplished. At the opening of the convent there were «>0 pupils, but today the roll number is 230. Pontifical high mass was celebrated in the morning, Bishop Brodie, of Christchurch, being the celebrant. A stirring address was delivered by Archbishop Redwood. In the afternoon an open-air function was held by the Convent Old Girls’ Association, at which commemorative medals were presented to ladies who were present at the laying of the foundation-stone. In the evening the Sacred Heart school old girls and St. Anne’s Guild made presentations to the nuns in recognition of the work being done at the convent.
