FILMS AND THE STUDIOS

ROMANCE of SOUND— When the final page of motion pteture history has been written it ,cill probably be foyml that the most romantic chapter uas not its. early pioneering days, not its wartime period of general patents and net even that mushroom transition from the tiny hall to the de-luxe *ee thousand seat theatre. The chapter will be "Now." These arc the greatest, days in pietires, claims an American writer. This new giant that is destined to give the world a new and cheap amusement will ever grow and move forward. In the remaking many familiar faces have been lost. Many of the glittering stars of yesterday arc no more. Taking their places have come new screen favourites unheartP of in picture circles twelve months ago. That this industry was able to adjust itself to this new and greater order of things with practically no disorder is an example of its collective foresight and mentality. From Will Hays down, all have had prominent parts to play in this story of evolution. To name any one. of a hundred executives who have played outstanding parts icould be to slight the other ninety nine. This business has ben moving with such speed during the past eighteen months’that it is hard for those even in the innermost circles to keep up with its proper perspective and to realise the tremendous part the talking and sound pictures are playing. The motion picture is no longer a part of the amusement business. It is the amusement business. The picture business is just starting. All that has gone before is simply preparation and these advanceguard mirrowed reflections that ice are now getting from sound studios are but experimental examples of the great things to come.
