LIGHTNING SPLITS TREE
SHELTERING MAN’S NARROW ESCAPE (Special to THE SUN) CHRISTCHURCH, Today. A heavy thunderstorm broke over Christchurch yesterday afternoon and lightning struck one of the tall poplar trees on the bank of the Avon to the west of the Barbadoes Street Bridge. Huge splinters were torn off the trunk and thrown to the road some distance away. One piece was 53ft. long and a foot thick and 30ft. from the ground and the main trunk split open by a 12ft. crack. A man with a horse and cart was sheltering under the tree from the rain. A piece of wood whizzed passed his head and he felt a shock when the tree was struck but otherwise escaped
