WILKINS IN ANTARCTICA
WORK GOES ON DESPITE ICY WINDS LONDON, Thursday. Sir Hubert Wilkins, in a wireless message sent yesterday, says: “Strong south winds, carrying a chill from the glacier ridge on Graham Island, swept , over Deception Island today, but it has not. halted the work of the expedition, which proceeds unceasingly from six in the morning until late at night, except on Sunday. “Even here what we call the day of rest does not begin until eight o’clock. Even so, our condition is comparatively luxurious. We are ensconced in heated cabins, and stewards serve good food in abundance. “We drive to work each morning in a small British, motor-car, wondering all the time how earlier polar explorers spent the long months, sledging and existing on meagre rations.”
