CATHOLIC PRIESTHOOD

FATHER TERRY RETURNS FROM ROME AUCKLAND ORDINATIONS It was unfortunate that ill-health prevented the Rev. Francis H. Terry, of Auckland, from completing his studies at Rome. Father Terry, who returned recently, had obtained the licentiate in theology and then sat for his doctorate, but a breakdown in his health presented him from sitting and completing a brilliant career. Father Terry is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Terry, of St. Mary’s Road, Ponsonby, and was educated at the Vermont Street School and Sacred Heart College, where he passed the matriculation examination. He then .spent three years at the Holy Cross College, Mosgiel, and went to Rome in 1925. He studied for four years at the Lateran Seminary, where he was a member of the Irish College, and was ordained in the Basilica of St. John Lateran, Rome, by the Cardinal Vicar in November, 1928. It was particularly unfortunate that Father Terry was unable to sit for his final examination as he had obtained a number of the highest awards when reading the course, and his final success was almost assured. After leaving Rome Father Terry visited all the important centres in Europe and Great Britain before returning to New Zealand. AUCKLAND ORDINATIONS Two young Aucklanders entered the priesthood recently when the ordination of the Rev. Fathers H. Hyde and V. Courteney took place at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Father Courteney completed his studies at St. Patrick's College. Manly, and Father Hyde read his whole course at Holy Cross College Mosgiel.
