THRILLING CONTESTS EXPECTED

The Prospects Reviewed WITH the course at Devonport iu wonderful order after the midweek rains, and with splendid acceptances, the . opening tomorrow of the Takapuna Jockey Club’s spring meeting promises to be a brilliant success. A frequent ferry service will take racegoers to the convincing ground with dispatch, while country visitors from north and south are well catered for in the matter of train arrangements. “Early Bird’s” review of the prospects for the opening day is given below. nCf» MELROSE MAIDEN STAKES •<>w Of £250; 7 furlongs Taurua 1 '"’ S 0 This is a rare problem confront- Stal " ' ? ® Xeil .... . 8 0 ins backers for the start of the Measure . 8 0 Alloy ....SO day’s picking, for there appears to Car laris . . 8 0 Coll. ...SO be absolutely nothing standing out. Glena Bay won very easily at Te Kuiti, and with a share of luck in the running would have scored twice. Motere is a good threo-year-o!d. and of the others Master Roley, Harbour View, Bizarro, Waitaunaha and Red Bay impress most. There should be a lot of demand for the numbers of: — * GLENA BAY and SIR ARCHIE 1 OA BOROUGH HANDICAP 1-A-U Of £350 ; 9 furlongs Maori Bn.v . Eager Rose has Glenstar . 7 0 been racing and working well, and Hipo might have Tanagra .’ ! 7 0 won both days at Te Kuiti instead of one. He is back to his best, and if favourably placed at the home turn must be dangerous. Macroom is also in the sprint, but is a possibility in both. Cynthia N.. Gemlight. Glenstar. Mithra and Refresher seem to be the best of the remainder, with the last mentioned pair representing the strong Takanini stable, which cannot be overlooked at Takapuna meetings. It is not an easy race to sum up, but three that promise to come in for big support are: PRINCE VAL, REFRESHER, and HIPO OIA ALISON CUP “•1” Of £600; 1 mile 3 furlongs and 40 yards Prodice Shaae 8 “ A se P ai ' ate article covers this Transformer 1 2 Corinax / 8 5 event more Extensively than could Flying Juliet 7 1 Hvde 7 9 be done here * ° ut of the ten ac ' ° Wedding . 7 1 Be Choucas 7 S ceptors only four have won on the The Lover 7 0 flat this season, these being In the Shade (who is under a cloud). Prodice lias shown some good form, being second to Historic in the Avondale Cup, in addition to winning at Cambridge, and in her only two other starts she ran good races at Riccarton. Now she comes in with one pound less than she carried at Avondale. Without going into further details, it can be said that backers will probably declare themselves in favour of: PRODICE and CORINAX O CC CAMBRIA HANDICAP £*•'*'* Of £350; 5 furlongs 5V a H-- ' ‘ 1 Two-year-old races at the Shore ’ 4 5 Oil Ring . • o 4 cavidie ... < r* ! Orapai ran second to Royal Ruler at Avondale, and as i his conqueror at his next outing won the Welcome Stakes, the form was good, i Oil King won well at Te Rapa, and was badly interfered with the second day: he is greatly fancied. Sight Draft had Chief Link going strongly in the Musket Stakes, and among those well back was Oil King. King Ford was" third at Te Rapa, and Biddy’s Boy occupied the same position the second day there. Full Measure went well when he finished second at long odds to Kara - poti. and should improve on that. The bracketed pair, Tremetus and Thespis, hold fine prospects, for the former is very speedy and showed his pace when |he was left at Te Rapa. Caviare is the Takanini second string to Sight Draft, i and is reported to be a likely sort. Great Emblem. Bells of Shandon and Wild I Time complete a fine field, with the latter pair holding chances. Leitrim should have beaten Ridgemount last Monday, and that looked good form for this type of race. Duellona lias been racing most consistently, and her latest outing, third to Talisker and Mountain Heath, following on her Otaki win and second tj Eaglet in the Oaks, indicates that she is a class filly. Lady Quex. too. is a regular speed merchant, and if she runs straight, j will rake a lot of beating. Ridgemount won nicely at Te Kuiti with 131 b more in the saddle, but the company is rather superior to the crowd he accounted for : so narrowly. Nevertheless, he is a good sort. Lucy Rose is coming back to form, for she was close up at Te Rapa the second day. Takutama does not always run two races alike, and may be feeling the effects of his recent racing. Macroom is a possibility, for she is very well, and even if she fails here her backers will not have to wait long for another return. Tea Time is sprinting i well at headquarters, and Town Bird lias only to get a break on the field to take some catching up the short straight. The 'Begum disappointed at Te Kuiti. and is not near her best yet: she may be a better proposition in the autumn. Summed up. the sprint looks like being a duel between this pair both on the to ta lisa tor and on the course: VALLAR and LADY QUEX 1
