MISSED BOAT BY SEVERAL HOURS MUST PAY EXPENSES ‘This mau let us down rather badly.” said a representative o£ the New Zealand Shipping Company, when Dennis Buckley appeared at the Police Court this morning, charged with deserting from the Piako on November 26. Buckley, a trimmer, who was arrested by Detective-Sergeant McHugh, pleaded not guilty. The agent said that the men on the Piako had been suffering from w-hat they held was a grievance. The company had agreed to replace two men and when sailing time came in the small hours of the morning, accused had been missing. It had meant going down to the doss-house to find a substitute at a few minutes’ notice.
"I didn’t think the ship was sailing until morning and when I got down to the wharf she was gone,” explained Buckley.
Buckley was ordered to pay £2 10s expenses, in default seven days’ imprisonment.
