CRICKET WAS PLAYED IN NEW ZEALAND AS EARLY AS THE “FORTIES
MR. A. F. WIRE'S, better known to his Wellington friends as “Andy," gave an interesting lecture this week on early 'Wellington cricket. He said that the Wellington Cricket Club was first formed in 1849, though there are records of the game having been played as far back as 1841. At first the game was confined to teams from the one club, but in 1857 a challenge was issued to Wanganui, which town had also formed a club, for a match to be played at Otaki “for £ 5 a bat”—evidently the amateur status did not trouble players nearly so much in those days as it does now. It was not until 1843, said Mr. Wiren, that organised cricket was played in Auckland, where the Hon. F. Whitaker, who was at that time Premier, started a club. From the remarks of Mr. Wiren, it is quite evident that cricket is a very old-established game in New Zealand, and has passed through a very chequered career to reach the position it now holds in popular favour.
