Dona Id Stuart is best, known as one of the bis: “heads” of Otago Rugby, he having been president of the Otago Rugby Union for three years (1926-S). The older generation also knows that he was one of the leading forwards in the province and that he gained representative honours in 1904. in which year he played against all the other provinces and also for the South Island against the North. Further, he Just missed being chosen for the 1904 All Black team that made history in Great Britain. It is not so generally known, however, that the genial Donald. round about the same period, was one of Otago’s best oarsmen and swimmers, and a cracker jack at water polo. This last-mentioned sport languished in Dunedin for a long time, but has now been revived, and a Donald Stuart Banner competition is keeping it well alive. * «* * French Athletic Records An indication of progress in amateur atliletics in France is the passing, by the French Athletic Federation, o? Iwo new national records. The record for 300 metres is now 34 3-sses., put up by Marcel Moulines on August 9. The world’s record for this distance is C. W Paddock’s 33 l-ssec. Moulines also put up. on September 1, a new record lor 400 metres, of 4S 1-osoc. The world's record for 400 metres is J. K. Meredith’s 47 2-ssec., and the British performance is E. H. Liddell’s 47 3-saec. There is no best British performance on record fof 300 metres.
