PAEROA NOTES
The 34th annual meeting of the Paeroa Volunteer Fire Brigade was heU I on Tuesday, when officers were elected. ; —Superintendent W. Moore was unaniI mously re-elected, and other officers re-elected were:— Deputy- Superintendent, E. Moore: foreman. H. J. Wni ton: secretary. C. W. Malcolm. During the past year the brigade j has mustered on 36 occasions, seven n ! which have been to fires. At the Chamber of Commerce meeting a long discussion took place on the serious menace of noxious weeds tn the Ohinemuri and Hauraki Plains j Counties. In opening the discussion, the Mayor. Mr. W. Marshall, said that ragwort was already in flower m Karangahake. He suggested that th* chamber ask the Minister if som** • thing could be done in the matter beyond a mere departmental inquiry. Mr. McLean stated that there was no need to go as far as Karangahake to find noxious weeds as there wer** plenty in the Borough of Paeroa. Lano once worth £4O an acre was now worthless through noxious weeds. Mr. H. A. Mills said that the present laws were not being enforced suri- - menace, and they could be seen STOtcing along the public roads. Tall fe?i cue was not a noxious weed, but it j ought to be declared one. ; Mr. O’Xeill suggested that a committee be formed to go into th» i question and ascertain the opinions °- i other chambers and local bodies.
