RECORD SALES

IMPLEMENT TRADE BUSY

FLUSH OF FEED IN COUNTRY A phenomenal growth of feed in all parts of the province is reacting in the implement trade, where sales figures in respect to mowing machines and ensilage sweeps are reported to be exceeding all records. The increasing use of fertilisers of the past few years is being registered in the flush of feed which has followed the general rains of the past few weeks. Farmers are unable to cope with the growth, and more and more attention is being diverted to ensilage making. Ensilage is, in fact, taking the place of hay. Although last year saw all records broken for sales of mowing machines, this season the demand is even greater, and every day sees a consignment leave Auckland for the Waikato. Arrivals from overseas have been very heavy, while local manufacturers have also been working at capacity to cope with orders. An indication of the changing times can be taken from an instance given by the manager of one manufacturing concern. A few years ago a normal stock of ploughs in the firm’s Auckland showroom would be 80; today half a dozen suffices to meet all demands. Sales of fertiliser distributors during the last three years, on the other hand, have gone into thousands, while tine harrows, mowing machines and rakes reach new record levels each season.
