ENGLISH MARTYRS
BEATIFICATION CEREMONY ON DECEMBER 15
DECISION OF CARDINALS VATICAN CITY, Tuesday. At the Congregation of Rites, at which the Pope was present, it was decided that the English priests and other Roman Catholics who were condemned to death between the years 1594 and 1679 suffered martyrdom. Therefore their beatification will take place on December 15.
The tribunal of the Congregation of Rites is a permanent commission of cardinals, before whom the cause of the person proposed for canonisation is argued. The supreme arbiter is the Pope. Beatification is merely a step toward canonisation, or declaration of sainthood. The ceremony of beatification is held with special rites in the great hall above the vestibule of St. Peter’s, Rome.
