MUSIC EXAMINATIONS
UNIVERSITY COLLEGE
SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES The half-yearly examinations of the School of Music of the Auckland University College, which commenced last Saturday, concluded yesterday. The opinion was expressed by the examiners. Professor W. E. Thomas and Dr. S. Kenneth Phillips, that the examinations on the whole were not quite up to the usual standard in the technical parts. Scales and arpeggios were not so carefully looked after in the higher grades. There were some outstanding performances in the pieces, both in the junior and primary grades. In the senior grade, although no bad work was presented, there were no candidates who reached any degree of excellence in the playing. Honours would have been very welcome. In the analysis of the pieces performed a good many candidates had learnt the matter by heart. It would have been much more acceptable if the candidates had put their knowledge of form, etc., in their own words.
