DEATH FROM DOUBLE PNEUMONIA

NOTED MILITARY FIGURE Reed. 1.15 p.m. DELHI, Tuesday. The death has occurred of the Maharajah of Nepal at his home at Khathmandu, from double pneumonia. The Maharajah Chandra Shum Shere Jung Bahadur Rana, G.C.8., G.C.5.1., G.C.V.0., G.C.M.G., F.1.G.5., was born in 1863, the son of the Commander-in-Chief of the Nepalese Army. He was educated in ’ilndia and entered the army in 1877, was promoted Lieuten-ant-Colonel in 1880, Major-General 1882 and General of the Southern Command in ISBS. In 1901 he became Maharajah, Prime Minister, Marshal and Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Nepalese Forces. During the war he placed the whole of his military forces at the KingEmperor’s disposal and also presented a quantity of arms.. In 1919 he was created an Honorary General in the British Army and he is also Honorary Colonel of the 4th Gurkha Rifles. He was responsible for the abolition of slavery between 1924 and 1926 in Nepal, emancipating about 60.000 slaves throughout the whole kingdom at a cost of more than 35 lacs of rupees. He. has translated several military books into Nepalese and has received numerous foreign orders.
