Eric Pike, aged 15, today pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of John Smith, and was sentenced to three years’ hard labour, with subsequent detention in a reformatory. The charge was originally one of murder. The judge, in passing sentence, said: “Your youth saves you from the hanging you so well deserve.” The body of John Smith, -aged 36, a farmer, was found on a road, close to Mildura on October 22. There were 10 bullet wounds in the body, which appeared to have been dragged some distance behind a cart. Pike was arrested on a charge of murder.
