ONEHUNGA IMPROVEMENTS

SCHEME TO RAISE £I,OOO

PUBLIC MEETING HELD An ambitious scheme designed to raise £I,OOO for improving the Onehunga Public School grounds and to erect a band rotunda in Jellicoe Park was launched last evening at a wellattended public ' meeting held in the Onehunga Orphans’ Hall, Onehunga. The Mayor, Mr. E. Morton, presided, and Mr. John Park presented exhaustive proposals for the converting of the extensive school grounds into up-to-date playing areas for the children. His estimate of the cost was £1,500. half of which would be provided by the Education Department as a subsidy. Mr. T. H. Ashe represented the Citizens’ Band Committee and explained that a scheme was afoot for the erection of a band rotunda in Jellicoe Park. On his suggestion it was agreed to include both schemes in the campaign, the band to receive 20 per cent, of the proceeds. The following was the committee formed to formulate ways and means for raising the necessary funds: Mesdames W. Pickering, B. W. Mountray, A. M. Barker and King; Messrs. W. H. Hayward, H. de Wolfe, S. W. Mountray, T. H. Geraghty, J. Pilkington, T. H. Ashe, H. R. Strong and J. Hitt.
