Takapuna to Stage Best of Contests

SATURDAY’S OPENING CARD

A PRELIMINARY REVIEW Quality and quantity sums up the tine fields engaged in the eight events to be decided on the opening day of the Takapuna spring meeting, to be held at Takapuna on Saturday and Monday next. The fields average 16 a race, so that there will be plenty of runners. With ten in each of the two principal handicaps, the Alison Cup and Cheltenham Handicap, the fields are ideal, and with the best class engaged these contests promise to be worthy of the liberal prize-money offered. Hack Classic As in the past, the hack classic, the Takapuna Plate, has drawn all the best hacks, and it should be a very keen struggle. At present the number remaining in is 25, but by the time the horses go to the post this rather unwieldy number will probably be reduced to about 18. It takes a good horse to win the Takapuna Plate, and it will be found that the winner of next Saturday’s race will go on to better things. The coLirse is in excellent order after the recent light rains, and will be perfect for Saturday. As a guide to backers near and far, the following horses are selected as being among the most likely to get in the money on Saturday, the final fining down of the fields being reserved for Friday: Melrose Stakes.—Coll. Alloy, Loving Cup, Sweet Whisper, Fairy Bell, Tuku, Sea Son. the better of F. Loortib’s pair, Biddy Comet and Nassau Lady, and the better of J. T. Jamieson’s pair, I Clopton and Taurua. TO RIDE IN FRANCE

AUSTRALIAN JOCKEY W SCANLON

Another Australian jockey, W. Scanlon, lias been enticed to seek laurels abroad. Scanlon has been signed up by Frank Bullock to ride in France, for his patron, Al. JacqLies Wittouck. Scanlon will leave on January 7, and will be away for a year. For some time past Bullock has been anxious to secure Scanlon’s services, so the retainer must be substantial. He is a game rider, and should do well in France. Good riders are scarce on the Continent and it is a compliment to Australia that Munro and Scanlon have been engaged to ride in Germany and France respectively.
