BRED TO FLY
A maiden that showed some speed in that class at Te Kuiti on Monday was Perennis, owned by the Wanganui sportsmen, Messrs. J. O’Neill and M. McNair, and trained by H. L. Russell at Te Awamutu. She was hemmed
in on the rails crossing the top, and was conceding the leaders a big start, but she came home very fast from the false rail and finished right behind the placed horses. Perennis has faulty hocks, so that she may not have a long career on the turf. She is bred for speed, being by the successful sire Chief Ruler from that splendid sprinter of other days, Gladiole. This brood mare produced Orchid,,, a flying machine, but unsound, and two other of her progeny were winners last week, these being Marica and Rule Brittaniu. If she can be kept up to her work, trainer IF. L. Russeil should pick up a couple of races before the season ends.
