RACING AT OREWA
SUNDAY’S PROGRAMME BEACH IN GOOD ORDER Arrangements were completed at a committee meeting of the North Shore Sports and Motor-Cycle Club last evening for the handicap race meeting to be held on Orewa Beach on Sunday next. The first, event is timed to begin at 10.30. For the benefit of late comers, entries for tile afternoon races will not close until noon. Last evening a ladies’ race was added to the programme. All events except the 250 c.c. handicap and the ladies' race will be run on mile straights, with the starting and tinishing posts near the southern end of the beach. A new method of getting compete tors away is to be tried. Machines will assemble on the mark with their engines cut off. Instructions will be given regarding flags and distances, and the riders will then be sent half a mile down the beach away from the course fo warm up their engines, being given the signal as soon as they are in line again. This will make starting much easier and will avoid riders having to open full out on cold engines. A charge of one shilling will be made in the flying half-mile, this sum being refundable if the machine is entered in any of the events. It is understood that benzine will be available from a portable bowser pump at the beach. The surface is reported to be in excellent order. The programme is as follows: 10.30 a.m.—Flyiner half-mile for club championship. 11.15.—250 c.c. open handicap. Four miles, seven turns. 11.35.—Side-car handicap. Six miles, five turns. A cQnsolation race of six miles, with five turns, will also be run if time and the tide permits. Four starters will be needed to make a race, and six it there is to be a second prize. Members of the Sports Club will meet at the ferry wharf on Sunday morning to catch the 5.30 a.m. boat for Devonport. At Hall’s Corner, Takapuna, they will join the North Shore Club, leaving on the run to the beach shortly after nine o’clock. The roads are in good condition, and the 2S-mile journey should easily be completed in three-quarters of an hour.
