TRAM CENTRE POLES

PROGRESS OF REMOVAL

WORK ON PARNELL ROUTE A report on the Transport Board's work of removing tramway centre poles was made this morning by the manager, Mr. A. E. Ford. He said the work was being carried out on the Parnell route from Queen Street to the Blind Institute. “The total number of poles to be removed is G 7. Of these six have been taken out of Customs Street East and 28 between the Parnell railway bridge and St. Stephen’s Avenue,’’ said Mr. Ford. “Some time 'ago, when the power board was rebuilding its line on the right-hand side of the road going outwards, arrangements were made to locate its poles so as to enable us to make use of them when carrying out the removal of the centre poles at a later date. “More recently, similar arrangements were made with the Telegraph Department for a portion of the distance. In ‘consequence, it was necessary to erect only 25 poles instead of 90, which means a very considerable saving. It is expected to take out the remainder of the centre i>oles between St. Stephen’s Avenue and the Blind Institute during the next two weeks,” the manager continued. “The centre poles in Beach Road between Anzac Avenue and Gittos Street will be taken out when the layout for the new railway station is taken in hand.” •
