Evidently the people of VV est Bromwich, where the contest was staged, were more interested in a good tight than in Sunday afternoon naps, or walks. • • • In Auckland Tonight Billy Thomas, of Wales, and ‘Artie Hay, welter and middle-weight ehampion of New Zealand, clash at the Town Hall this evening. Thomas has been training hard at the Purnell gymnasium and is in good condition: but , ho has a hard task in front of him. It , is asking much.of him to beat such a heady tighter as the New Zealander Jlrst time up. but should he accomplish I !!* or even . make a good showing [ j Thomas will be worth future matches.! * * * j La Barba Not So Good ' . Here is some comment by A. J. Daniels, of ‘ Sporting Life." on the La j Barba-Francis tight in Paris: —Fidel i la Barba is possibly not as good, relatively. as a bantam as he was a flyweight when ho beat Elky Clark, the British champion, in a world’s title contest in New York nearly three years ago. On the other hand, it is possible that La Barba was not as fit ;1 -* he could be made when he boxed Kid Francis, the French and European bantam-weight champion. Colour is given to this Idea by the fact that La Barba, after starting off at a great ) pace and scoring off his opponent with I both hands from all angles, was graduI ally pegged back and made to look very j tired in three of the last four rounds [of tho 12-round bout. Francis docs ] not impress one at first sight as a 1 | classy boxe.r, but he is a real tough 1 [one. and his perfect condition and ' strength at in-lighting enabled him to outstay the flashy American and win a j very popular decision. ;
Although Phil Scott and Tommy Lou^hraii were down to fight on November 22, no word has been received of the x-esult. Tiie Association is still awaitinging a reply to an offer made to Norman Gillespie, light-weight cha#n]*ion of Australia, for a bout with Ted Morgan. Last year the feather-weight division was in the boom, and nearly all contests throughout New Zealand were waged between w}on of that class. Now the welter-weights, Trowern, Morgan. Hay. stone, Thomas and company are in the limelight. * * * Endeavours to get Morgan and Stone into the Westport ring on Boxing Night are being made. Since he was defeated by Morgan*, Stone, who was having his first professional bout, has not been seen in the ring. He is the class of boy who deserves matches and should be a good card for some of the smaller associations. * * * Trowern-Morgan Match Off Ted Morgan and Reg Trowern were to have fought at Gisborne last Saturday evening; but the bout was cancelled owing to Trowern injuring a hand in training. The Aucklander will
be ready to fight again early in December. and with the large number of welter-weights at present in the Dominion he should have no difficulty in getting into the money, as he is still a force to reckoned with.
