KEEN RACING
TE KUITI’S SUCCESSFUL MEETING
DEAD HEAT IN BIG RACE One of the most successful meetings ever Held by the Te' Kuiti Racing Club was that concluded yesterday, stirring contests and a comparatively big totalisator turnover ensuring an excellent two-days’ racing and a financial success for the club. The weather was fine again yesterday for the second day of the gathering, and the course was in fine order. Fields were good throughout, with the exception of the Mairoa Flying Handicap, a one-dividend quintet lining up. There were several surprise results, but despite this the totalisator speculation was keen. Yesterday the machine handled £13,532, against £10,9885 on the same day last spring, a substantial increase of £2,5435. this representing a rise of nearly 25 per cent. For the two days the returns amounted to £27,316, compared with £25,8645 last year, the increase for the two days being £1,4511. Raced in Line
A thrilling race was seen in the principal event, the Waitomo Handicap. A furlong from home the whole field of seven were in line, stretched right across the course, and so they raced to the half distance. Here The Lover and Ohinemuri drew slightly ahead, and then after them came Hipo. Five yards from the judge Ohinemuri had her head in front of The Lover, but the latter came at her again and the verdict was a dead-heat. The fast-finishing Hipo was only half a length away, and was perhaps a oit unlucky. The other four runners were in a heap just behind the placed horses. It was a great finish to a most spectacular contest.
The Maniapoto Hack Cup, which followed the big event, was another tight affair, the little fancied Pompeius (why should he have been only ‘’little fancied?”) beating another rank outsider, Spring Abbey, and the favourite, Glena Bay, by the narrowest of margins. The favourite was the unlucky horse of the race, but nevertheless there was a good deal of merit in the performance of the winner. Jockey’s Hat Trick
When the Te Rapa light-weight horseman, O. Mclnally, steered Ohinemuri to a dead-heat with The Lover in the Waitomo Handicap, it paved the way for the accomplishment of the hat trick, for in the next two races he scored on two outsiders in Pompeius and Macroom. This youthful jockey was riding in his best form. the excellent management ox tiie day’s programme evoked favourable comment, the various events being got off well to time. There was an inquiry held into the falling of Lady’s Boy in the last race, but the mishap was proved to be accidental. \ Trial Handicap Betting in the Trial Handicap took a wide range and the fancied quartet. Parfaif Amour (,€157), Nassau Lady (£146), Coll (£143) and Te Waitai (£126) were all at a good price. Nassau Lady, Searcher, and Vaireina were prominent when the field was dispatched, but at the end of a furlong Te Waitai made play from Vaireina, Coll, Biddy Comet and Belle Star, and a similar order was maintained round the turn, Te Waitai being clear at this stage. The leader hung on well in a desperate finish to beat Parfait Amour by half a length, with the outsider, Biddy Comet, a head further back. Nassau Lady was fourth, and in a heap followed Tuku, Coll, Perennis and Belle Star. The winner, who races in Pegaway’s colours, was having her first race and displayed plenty of promise. Pio Pio Hurdles
Master Roley had most friends in the Pio Pio Hurdles, winding up with £3Ol, as against The Lamb £221, but victory went to Archeen, third fancy with £l9l. Racing to the first fence Spalpiko. Archeen and Taha were in a line, but then Archeen drew out and led up the straight from Ned Kelly, Spalpilco, Taha, Master Roley, The Lamb, Otranto and Mashoor. Passing the five-furlongs Archeen had six lengths’ break over the field, but nearing the straight he was joined by Master Roley. with The Lamb and Mashoor following. Once straightened up. however, Archeen went out by himself and beat Master Roley comfortably by two lengths, The Lamb being in third place a length and a-half back. Then followed Mashoor, Otranto, Lucess, Taha and Ned Kelly in that order. Hangatikr Handicap The Hangataiki Handicap resulted in a boil-over, two outsiders in Patere £lls and Big Bertha £ll4 paying the dividends, Patere’s price being nearly double figures. Te Taone was favourite, with £312, the next best backed being Joy Girl £252 and Haviland Abbess was badly left at the itart, Valstreet being the early leader from Royal Lover, Patere, Te, Taone. Joy Girl, Oruaeban and Oscar, but with half the journey covered Te Taone assumed command and led across the top from Patere, Joy Girl, Valstreet. Cruachan and Big Bertha. Round the bend Te Taone was attended by Patere, Joy Girl, Big Bertha, Cruachan and Valstreet, the last four being in a line, with Big Bertha on the outside. It was a good finish, Patere drawing out to win fairly comfortably by a length from Big Bertha, who was half a length ahead of Valstreet. Snow Prince was just out of a place and iif close order came Cruachan, Joy Girl, Royal Lover Gay Caballero and Oscar. Waitomo Handicap Four in the Waitomo Jlandicap reduced the field to seven starters, and backers wanted nothing else by The Swell (£551), the second Choice, Ti Tree, carrying only £293 But a surprise awaited backers, The Lover £159, and Ohinemuri £129, dividing the prize-money. Soon after they were sent on the journey Flying Prince, Blaek Maire and Ti Tree were neck and neck, with Ohinemuri, The Swell, Hipo and The Lover following. Turning out of the straight Ti Tree, on the rails, ran wide, carrying out Flying Prince and Black Maire. The Swell, however, meeting with all the trouble going. Moving down the back stretch Black Maire and Flying Prince were making the pace together, and chasing this pair were Ti Tree, Ohinemuri, Hipo, The Lover and The Swell, the last-named being badly placed. With five furlongs to go Ti Tree ran up to Black Maire and these two had as their nearest attendants Hipo, Flying Prince, Ohinemuri, The Lover and The Swell. The leaders still held their position at the straight and-, were two lengths ahead of Hipo. The Lover, Flying Prince and Ohinemuri, with The Swell last. A great race home resulted and inside the last furlong the whole seven runners were ‘in a line. The Lover and Ohinemuri drew out over the last bit, and although the latter was a head ,’n front practically

at the post. The Lover came again, and the judge failed to separate them. Hipo, who finished well, was half a length away third, and a further half length back was Ti Tree, who was followed by Black Maire, Flying Prince, and The Swell, who were all right up. Maniapoto Hack Cup The Maniapoto Hack Cup proved another set-back for punters, the two outsiders of the field Pompieus (£7l) and Spring Abbey (£57) beating the favourite, Glena Bay (£4S7). Mote.re got badly away, and going out of the straight Luminary was in the role of pacemaker % from Red Day, Spring Abbey, Pompieus, Thurnus, Hakanoa, Mountain Guide, Tuku (wide out), Unoco and Glena Bay. Running along the back Red Day joined Luminary, and there was daylight back to Spring Abbey, Tuku, Thurnus, Hakanoa, Pompieus and Motere, with the favourite last and getting into trouble attempting to improve his position. The field bunched nearing the home stretch, and as they swung round the bend Red Day was slightly ahead of Luminary, with Tuku, Spring Abbey, Unoco, Motere, Glena Bay (wide out) and Pompieus all handily placed. The race appeared to be in the keeping of Spring Abbey and Glena Bay lou yards from the post, but Pompieus flashed up with a lino run and carried off the honours by a neck. Spring Abbey was a head in front of Glena Bay. Hakanoa was right up, fourth, and then came Unoco, Thurnus, Motere, Red Day and Luminary. The winner paid nearly a score, and the second horse’s dividend was well on the way to double figures. Mairoa Flying The defection of Awarere and Archeen left a five-horse field in the open six, Takutama (£ 500) winding up a good favourite, with The Begum carrying £3lO, while Macroom, despite her recent promising form, was the outsider of the field with £IS3. Billikins led out of the barrier from The Begum, Takutama, Prince Lu, and Macroom. At the half-mile Billikins was making play from The Begum, Macroom, Prince Lu, and Takutama. As the quintet turned for home, Macroom was on Billikins’s quarters, with The Begum and Prince Lu close up. Macroom and Billikins had a short tussle before the former came away, and finally won by a length and a-half, The Begum being a length behind Billikins. Takutama finished strongly into fourth place, and Prince Lu was last. The winner returned y false price. Rangitoto Hack A seven-horse field contested the Rangitoto Hack Handicap, the betting market favouring in decided manner Valroe, who was a hot pot with £6lO. There was a drop, to Terrapeen, £370, with Grand Arch (£158) sixth favourite. Crown Arch, Valroe, and Always jumped out smartly, but at the end of a couple of furlongs Ruby Dawn and Crown Arch were in the van from Valroe, Grand Arch, Terrapeen, and Always. As they came round the home bend, Valroe and Ruby Dawn were on terms ahead of Grand Arch, Always, Crown Arch, and Terrapeen. Once straightened up, the favourite began to draw away, and finally won easily by a couple of lengths from Grand who was a length in advance of Crown Arch. Always was fourth, and Ruby Dawn, William of Orange, and Terrapeen next. Farewell Handicap Ten contested the final event, the open sprint, Ridgemount (£426) winding up favourite, with Awamutu (£377) and Leitrim (£223) fairly well supported. Awamutu got away badly, and Lady’s Boy dwelt, the former being started from behind the field Ridgemount jumped out with a clear advantage over Billikins, but at the half-mile Town Bird had run up to Ridgemount, with Joy Germ right up at the head of a bunch. Town Bird was just clear at the home turn Ridgemount, Awamutu, Joy Germ, Leitrim, and Billikins following. The leader was done with at the distance, and Ridgemount went on to win by half a tlle fas t-finishing JLeitrim. with Billikins half a lengtlf away third Town Bird was fourth, and Joy Geim, Uaviland, Oscar, and Awamutu were the next to cross the line. Leitrim was unlucky' Lady’s Bov fell two furlongs from home. Following are the results:
