MR. W. J. GIRLING’S VIEWS

"The control by Mr. Speaker in the State Parliaments of Vic toria and New South Wales is ridiculous,*’ said Mr. TV. J. Girling. \-M.P. for Wairuu. who returned from Australia by the Ulimaiua this morning. The need for a strong Speaker was very noticeable. lie considered that after cumpuring the conduct of Australian politics with those of the Dominion he had come to the conclusion that New Zealand set a very high standard indeed. The system of voting in Parliament was very crude. .Vlemoers did not go into the lobbies to vote on a division. The tellers simply counted by looking ruuiid the chamber. Canberra, the Commonwealth capital, was beautifully laid out. and the hotel accommodation was splendid under Government control.

Mr. Girling said he found many people who advocated free trade between Australia and New Zealand. He thought that the new Government would increase the tarilTs m order to protect Australian industries. This would mean an increase in prices in certain commodities. Mr. Girling found that at present footwear was the only Australian commodity which was cheaper than New Zealand prices—everything else was much dearer and ttats were ridiculously ■HR
