The British Government, however, had not only made compassionate allowances amounting to £5,000,003 |to individuals, but had offered to waive claims to properties as yet unliquidated worth £5,000,900. More could not be done in justice to the British taxpayer, and this was equivalent to the abandonment, as far ag i possible, of the relevant provision cf , the treaty. =■' ■■ ■
