Citizens to Ask for Trams in Albert St.

DEPUTATION FORMED EXTENSION OF SERVICES A strong move to develop as a business centre the area west of Queen Street and, at the same time, provide a much-needed extension of city services, is being made by the West of Queen Street Development Association. rpOMORROW at 11.30 a.m. a representative deputation will approach the Auckland Transport Board and ask for increased transport facilities in the area concerned, especially a tram service in Albert Street. The area which is considered to be worthy of intensive development, both as a shopping and general business centre, and also as a means of solving in some measure the increasing problem of Queen Street congestion, is bounded on the east by Queen Street, on the west by Nelson Street and Market Place, on the south by Wellesley Street West, and on the north by the waterfront. In it are Hobson and Albert Streets, two increasingly busy and important thoroughfares. Quay Street West, Custors Street West, Wyudham Street, Victoria Street and Wellesley Street, all important outlets and inlets to Queen Street, and all capable of extensive development. In addition there are no fewer than 1G side streets, each communicating with and tapping established businesses and valuable sites. The purpose of the association is to promote in every possible way the development as a retail shopping and business loop, the area described. It is claimed that this will not unduly compete with Queen Street retailers.
