TALISKER AT LEVIN

SCORES NARROW VICTORY IN BIG RACE THREE RIDERS INJURED Spceiul io THE SI'S WELLINGTON, Saturday. | The Levin Cup was a great race, and in a strenuous finish Talisker defeated Mountain Heath by a 1 nose, with Rameses a neck away third. The favourite. Duellona. was dose up fourth. The weather w.is fine, the nttemlj .nice large, and the course hard and ! fast, for The Levin Karins Club's oneda.v •fixture. Tota lisa tor returns showed an increase of £2.075 ov< r last . year, the respective figures being: ! i 1928. £ 1 6.266: 1929. £18.341. Jockeys Injured Three jockeys were injured when i their mounts fell in the last rare of : ; the day—the* llokio Handicap. Going < round the back, Le Champ came to grief. and brought down Golden ; Shadow, over whom fell Pompadour. T. Green, rider of Golden Shadow, sus- , rained a broken collarbone, and N. ; Voitre. rider of Le Champ, and W. Broughton. rider of Pompadour, rei ceived slight concussion. Favourite Beaten Public judgment proved fairly good 1 ; in the maiden race, in which lJen-Jlur ( £4.l'J) carried the major portion of ! the money on tlie totalisato.r, although j Glenrossie (£230) and Pari ( £190) | were also freely supported. Glen- : russie deposed the favourite from, pride i of place at the finishing point. Dam - I ing Star was smartest away to lead 1 i Streamer. Ben-Hur, Evening Hero, j l-lortense, and General Gas, but up- ; proaching tlie turn Glenrossie. Good ; Acre, and Grecian made forward moves, j Ben-Ilur was, however, the first to | straighten out from Dancing Star, with (Glenrossie commencing his run, and i the challenger finished too strongly for 1 tho favourite, there being a clear i length between the pair at the post. 1 Pari, who had not been in the first half-dozen at the turn, got up to take j third money, three lengths back, with j Grecian, Dancing Star, General Gas, j and Evening Hero next to finish. ! Glenrossie is pretty useful. •Small Field In the Manakau Hurdles only five j faced the starter. Hard Gold £493, ; who had won at Otaki, was backed with confidence, although there was surprising support for Hash £368 and Schorr £235. As usual, Hash went to the front immediately tlie tapes lifted, to open up a gap from Schorr, Call Again and Hard Gold, with General Wai bringing up the rear. Schorr made a faulty jump in the straight to lose ground, and Hard Gold moved forward into second place going into the back and was with the pacemaker half a mile from home. The favourite outjumped his companion thereafter and once landed into the straight, drew away to win by six lengths from Hash, who beat the fastfinishing Call Again by a length. Then came a gap of a dozen lengths to General Wai. who headed off Schorr on the post. Hard Gold was distinctly superior to the others. Outsiders Fight It Out Make Up got the best of the start in the YVeraroa Hack Handicap, and the top weight led Footpad, Elysianor and Dermod going round the bend, but j when settled down in the back, Footj pad went to the front from Dermod, j Mako Up and Elysianor. However, ap- | preaching the half-mile peg Le Cham]) ran up to Footpad and the pair led Pompadour to the straight entrance, with Make Up in behind on the rails, and Dainty Ways, Goldlike and Plane coming up on the outside. Once straightened out, Dainty Ways shot to the front, with Goldlike in pursuit, and the latter wore the leader down to win by a short head, with Plane two lengths back. All three placegetters were at long prices and yet another in Pompadour led Make Up and Elysianor home. Make Up was unlucky at the home turn. Marica Scores Well There were many scratchings from the Mako Mako Hack Handicap, in which Clarendon £420 was slightly better favoured than Ex Dono £404 and Marica £4Ol. Patearoa jumped out smartly to pilot Marica, Ex Dono, Mandy and Acredity along the back, but with a couple of furlongs gone Marica went to the front to show the way to Patearoa. Ex Dono, national 11. and Mandy into the straight. Ex Dono challenged, but, hard ridden. Marica retained Iter position to win by a length from Ex Dono, with Patearoa a couple of lengths back, and just ahead of Clarendon. Ex Dono is not yet at his best, but ran a fair race. A Fine Contest The cup was closely contested 'all the way. Duellona (£756) was preferred to The Hawk (£628) and Talisker (£443), but the public proved slightly astray, Talisker getting home by the narrowest of margins from Mountain Heath, although they finished nt opposite sides of the course. Rameses assumed the role of pacemaker over tlie early portion, with The Hawk, Duellona, Royal Game, Talisker and Roi De Val in close attendance. The Hawk dropped back prior to the field turning into the back straight, and the order as they turned for home was Rameses and Royal Game together ahead of Duellona and Talisker, with Mountain Heath alongside The Hawk and ahead of Moutoa Treasury. When heads were straightened out Mountain Heath came through on the rails, whereas the leading division were carried out wide, but Talisker finished right out to be awarded the honours by a nose from Mountain Heath", with Rameses a neck away. It was the closest of finishes. Duellona was fourth, with Imperial Spark, Discourse and Roi De Val next to finish. There was interference in tlie straight and Talisker and Duellona were among the sufferers. r J alisker did well to come again and win. The placing of Duellona and Rameses were altered to third and fourth respectively. Favourite’s Close Call In the_ Lake Hack Handicap Iviriana (£589) was installed favourite trom Masher (£481), the volume of betting dwindling thereafter. Passing tin ough the straight Fallow was out in front from Airforce, Disrank, Robbie’s Mistake and Kiriana. Approaching the turn for home Masher and Fine Acre made forward moves, and the former was attending Fallow as they came into the straight, with Fine Acre and Disrank in behind. Inside the distance Masher promised to be the winner, but Kiriana came with a late run to get up and snatch the honours on the post by half a head. Fallow, 1 who had hung on surprisingly well was in third* place a neck away, and then came Disrank, Fine Acre, Robbie's Mistake and Airforce. Masher was a bit unlucky, in as much as Kiriana's finishing effort seemed to be unexpected. Veronese Succeeds Another close finish resulted in the McDonald Memorial Banket jumped to the front when the tapes were released, to show the way to Veronese, Hunting Bov and Quantum along the back, there bein'" little change right to the straight cn- ; trance, although Peneus made an at- ! tempt crossing the top to reach the ; leaders. Banket was still in front j within n few yards of the post, but j she died away, enabling Veronese to get up to win by a head, with a gap of two lengths to Quantum, who was clear of Hunting Boy. Then came at still further intervals Wanderlust arjd

Peneus. Hunting Boy was disay- j pointing, but will improve. Accra was backed heavily in the llokio Hack Handicap. Just began I well, and led with Accra to the ' straight, where Tea Taster was handy. Just So finished too well for Accra, ami won bv a length, with Tea Taster j nearly *two lengths back third. Acre- , line and Tapestry were next.
