Hipo Springs Te Kuiti Cup Surprise
LADY’S BOY UNLUCKY SPRINT TO TOWN BIRD The feature of Saturday's racing ;’t Te Kuiti was the triumph of Taranaki horses in the Te Kuiti Cup, which was a splendid contest throughout, ilipo flashed up on the rails near the post to get the stake and handsome by half a length, with a neck separating The Swell and Lady's Boy. Lady's Boy appeared to be a. certainty beaten. Going out of the straight, with n couple of furlongs gone. Flying Prince (on the rails) was fectding slightly from Black Maire and Lady’s Boy. and when the leader hung out Black Maire ran off, and Lady’s Boy went too, both horses going off the course, the latter almost getting into the "rough” country. Both Black Maire and Lady’s Boy went excellent races after this mishap, especially the latter. This was liipo's first win for some time, so that it was not to be wondered at that he was at a double figure quotation. Both the winner and the runner-up. The fc?well. hail from New Plymouth. The other two open races on the programme, fined down to five-horse contests, but the finishes were close. Ti Tree and Town Bird (the latter ;.t a good price) being the winners. With line weather and a large' attendance (the gate r ceipts showing an increase), it wm* expected that the totali.sa.tor returns, would bo favourable. but the two five-horse races, and the* success of some little-fancied winners, made itself l'clt. the figures on Saturday being U 13.754. a decrease of | C .1,092. In the run home Oscar went through on the rails to win by a length from Valstreet. with Quinsilia a neck away third. Then came Big Bertha, Princess Snow, Crown Arch, William of Orange, Royal Lover and Monetize. Stewards’ Handicap The free use of the scratching pen reduced the sprint field sadly, only five out of the 3 3 acceptors going to the post. Awa.rere (£573) was a good favourite, while Town Bird (£173) was at the other end of the quotations. The favourite lost ground at the barrier, and ran in the rear throughout. Town Bird making play along the back from Billikins, Takutama, and The Begum. Crossing the top Town Bird went farther away, and when he turned for home he had a lead of half a dozen lengths over The Begum, with Takutama and Billikins right up.
