TO AND FRO

Tin; QUIET CORN IST:

(Written tor THE SUy by the Rev. Charles Chandler, Assistant City Missioner.) the Lord said unto Satan: “Whence contest thou?” Then Satan answered the Lord and said • “From, going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.” This “pendultimic" action of ltis Satanic Majesty is common to all mankind. Life is made up of to and fro. Each of us beats a track from somewhere to somewhere else and back again. Every path ice take, save that which leads to death, must be retraced. Our lives radiate from one centre, and going to and coming from that point we spend our days. The distance from tlir centre to the circumference is surprisingly short with most, of us. We pity the lion who walks to and. fro with silent tread within his cage, yet do the very same ourselves. We are cabined and con'ined within the narrow walls of fear and self-distrust, and to and fro. for weal or woe. we come and go. Gurgling with life and laughter u:r helpless land upon the scene. With first, a crawl and then a walk, and then a run, wr hasten on i"ward some goal, presumably within our reach: then having grasped or missed the prize, with shortened breath we cease to run, then walk, thru falter on until all life is gone and we are still. "In trailing clouds of glory do we come.” and. helped along by oith. and in a mist of tears we go. To anrl fro. NEXT WEEK: HACK IN TEN MINUTES.
