MR. A. SUTHERLAND OF JOHN BURNS AND CO. POPULAR REPRESENTATIVE News was received in Auckland late yesterday afternoon of the death at Apia. Samoa, yesterday, of Mr. Alexander Sutherland, representative for Messrs. John Burns and Company, Ltd., in the Pacific Islands. Not only a well-known and very popular figure in the Islands, Mr. Sutherland was for many years closely associated with yachting in Auckland. Mr. Sutherland, whose time was almost continually spent in the Islands, left Auckland in September, and was expected back on the Tofua’s last trip, but illness necessitated his staying at Apia for an operation. The operation was not- considered serious, aud his death, following the operation. came as a sad shock to his many friends. Mr. Sutherland, who was about 50 years of age, had been associated with John Burns and Company for about 30 years, and was held in very popular regard by all members of the staff. With the business people in the Islands, where he had watched the

KEEN YACHTSMAN Before his duties called him away to the Islands, Mr. Sutherland was a very keen yatchtsman, being a member of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, and, for some time, a member of its committee. He built the C class keeler Janet, and with his father and brother was associated with the building of the B class keeler Waione, both wellknown boats with fine racing records. Although his duties took him away a great deal from Auckland, Mr. Sutherland always followed the doings of the Auckland boats with keen interest, and on his visits to Auckland never failed to acquaint himself with the activities of the various clubs. He had . the reputation of being a skilled yachtsman and an expert at all aquatic sports. His brother. Mr. Kenneth Sutherland. who was also keenly interested in the sport, was drowned off North Head some 10 years ago as the result of a boating accident. Mr. Sutherland, who leaves a widow and two children, resided at 316 Remuera Road.
