WOMAN CLAIMS £379 ACTION AGAINST CARRIER I'rom Our Oicn Correspondent HAMILTON, Today, j As a sequel to injuries received « through being crushed against the platform.of a shed by a motor-truck, ; a married woman, of Puketurua, near j Putaruru, Mrs. Caroline Kiugscott j claimed £379 19s 3d in the Supreme I Court today from George Leslie • Martin, carrier, Putaruru. | Plaintiff was represented by Mr. J. T\ Strang and defendant by Mr. H. J. Me Mull in. According to the statement of claim one of the defendant’s employees, Willoughby, on tlfe day of the accident, carted a load of manure on a motor-truck to the farm of George Kingseott, plaintiff’s husband. Willoughby backed the truck in a slied to unload, after which he started the engiffre of the truck and reversed, striking and severely injuring plaintiff. The sum of £350 was claimed as general damages, the balance as ! special. The defence held that the accident could have been avoided by plaintiff exercising reasonable care. An alteri native plea was made that the acci- ; dent was inevitable. Mr. Strang said the plaintiff nearly , lost her life as the result of the accident, which was caused by the defendant leaving the truck in -gear • and failing to free the clutch before | restarting.
