SUSPICION JUSTIFIED
STOLEN FRUIT UNDER COAT BACK TO GAOL AGAIN Seeing two men lurking about Newmarket in a suspicious manner yesterday, a constable approached them. One man got away, but the other was found to have stolen fruit under his coat. Daniel TJebley, a labourer, aged 35, was charged at til© Police Court this morning with stealing a box of assorted fruit valued at 2 s 6d, and belonging to Marriotts, Ltd. He pleaded guilty. Sub-Inspector McCarthy said 'that the man had been arrested in Newmarket yesterday. Investigations had disclosed that the box of fruit under Hebley’s coat had been taken from a shop in Newmarket, where he had bought a few pence’worth of methylated spirits. “Why, he is just out of gaol,” remarked Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M. The Sub-inspector: He evidently thought that stealing was the easiest way to make a living. The Magistrate: It is the easiest way to get back to gaol. Sentence of one month’s imprisonment was imposed.
