March.—Crass track races nt TakaAUCKLANDERS IN SOUTH FIRST TRY OUT ON CINDERS An excellent showing against experienced riders which augurs well for success in the future was made by the ! three Auckland riders, Messrs. A. Matj son. \V. Allen and J. Garmson, who raced on two nights at Monica Park, Christchurch, and on Saturday night last at the Kilbirnie Stadium. Wellington. Allen established a track record at Christchurch of I.34*sec for the four laps, which, however, was lowered again by 2sec by H. Mangham, a Southern rider who has had consideri able experience in Australia. ; Garmson and Matson had never even I seen a cinder track before they visited the Wellington stadium on their way * south, but both are said to show great promise, although the former was ’ somewhat unsteady and fell several times on the corners. Matson and Alien met in the final of the Monica Park Handicap. ROYAL ENFIELD’S WIN At the Sports Motor-Cycle Club's | races at Muriwai over the week-end I the Royal Kn fields came out very : well indeed. Out of the five races, they were first and second in three, and first and third in another —a total of eight places. The only event in ; which they failed to score was the i Ladies’ Race. This make of motor-cycle also won two firsts at the Whangarei races last Saturday, as well as putting lip the fastest time.
“FLAPPER BRACKETS” HOW PILLION RIDINC- WAS MADE L.EGAL COST TO SPORTS' CLUB Motor-cyclists in Auckland have come to look on pillion passengers as quite the usual thing, but it is only during the last year or two that they have been allowed under the city regulations. Formerly there was a by-law relating to tiie city area which prohibited any motor-cycle being ridden with two up. although pillion passengers were allowed in most of the surrounding boroughs. This led to great confusion. A rider from the North Shore taking a friend to Penrose, for instance, had to send him on by tram through the city it) Newmarket, where he could take his ploce on the pillion for a few chains before entering the city area again for a mile or so. The question of safety was the factor influencing the City Council in prohibiting two on a machine. The Sports Motor-cycle Club, by collecting
t • ail sties reg a ruing accidents and by ; personal evidence, showed that* pillion riding, if more risky than solo work in some instances, is often actually safer v ith an experienced passenger. However. by the time the by-law was repealed the club was faced with a bill of about £6O for legal expenses. A large proportion of this is still owing, as the club funds were not equal to these demands. Efforts in the past have been fairly successful and a further campaign to raise funds to wipe j out the debt completely will be made j on Sunday next, when a pillion run will be held. Members will meet at the Burns Statue iu the Domain at 10.30 a.m., and will scatter along the popular roads. It is hoped that fellowfollowers of the sport will contribute toward the fund when the position is put squarely to them. Although this problem did not. have to be faced by the North Shore club, members across the harbour are in sympathy with the , city club’s aim. and several will com- 1 bine with them in their drive. The position was cleared up by the) Motor Vehicles Act of 192-1. which I legalised pillion riding throughout the Dominion, but this may be taken to | have been a result in some measure ; of the stand taken by motor-cycle j clubs in Auckland and elsewhere. It : is to be hoped that all motor-cyclists : will remember that the “flapper j bracket” vogue would have been long delayed but for the Sports Club, and will contribute cheerfully when asked, j
