True Blood Completes the Waikato Double
MERVETTE CAPTURES SPRINT LUMINARY AND ANTIQUE SURPRISE Following up its success on Sutur- , day. the opening day of its spring j meeting, the Waikato Racing Club yesterday had another good day. fine J weather, a large attendance, and the j best of racing on the excellent course j at Te Rapa, putting everybody on good j terms with themselves. The course J was faster than on Saturday. True Blood won the Waikato Cup ! by the narrowest of margins the first ! day, and he followed this up yester- | day by winning the principal event by j a nose, getting up right on the post. ! The favourite. Prince Val. ran a great j race, and over the final furlong lie | gave True Blood something to do to j catch him. High Pitch was a mo'der- ; ate third. The sprint saw Mervette win in a i very tight finish over Eager Rose .and j A war ere, a length and a-half separat- ! ing the first six horses in the best race * of the day. Luminary sprang a big; surprise in ! the Hack Cup, and Antique, one of the j few gets of imported Tonbridge, was j perhaps a bit unlucky in oniy shar- j ing the honours with Te Hoia in the ! Frankton Handicap. Antique was at j extreme odds, while Te Hoia gave his i legion of supporters a Gloaming dividend. The meeting was excellently man- : aged and there was little to call for tlio intervention of the stewards. How- • ever, in one or two races yesterday 1 there appeared to be a good deal of interference, especially in the two-year-old race. Here the second iavourite, Karapoti (H. Gray) caused trouble by cutting sharply across the field soon after the start. An ex planation asked of the rider was deemed satisfactory. Despite the several big dividends returned the totalisator figures kept up well, the machine handling £26,653 lUs. This brought the total for the two days to £56.736 10s, against £52,265 10s, an increase of £3,471. This, with the considerably increased gate takings, \vould tend to make the meeting the most successful held by the club for many seasons. IMatanfli Hurdles Red Comet, £441, and The Lamb, £338, were best supported in the i hurdlo event. Xed Kelly went to the lead quickly and at the stand had a 10-length lead on The Lamb, Wako King. Red Comet and Ah Wera. The favourite ran to the front at the halfi mile, being attended by Xed Kelly, Wako King. Ah Wera and The Lamb. | At the home turn Red Comet was three lengths clear of Wako King and The Lamb, but the latter finished strongly ; to get up and beat the favourite by a I neck. Wako King was a length away third, followed by Rahepoto, Ah Wera. Gold Rep and Xed Kelly. Frankton Handicap i The public would oniy have Te Hoia ! in the Frankton Handicap and he c*ar- ! ried £047, and was at a Gloaming ! price, when he could only dead heat. ’ Antique. who finished on terms with the favourite, was only entrusted with £4B and paid almost a quarter of a century. Sweet whisper, Welcome Boy and Belle Star were the first to show out, and they led along the back from Prairie King, Sports King, Te Hoia and Antique. Master Latour moved up fast along the back and was in charge at the home turn from Welcome Boy, Sweet Whisper, Te Hoia and Belle Star, with Prairie King, Glenstar, Norval Tea and Antique bunched close up. The favourite looked a winner at the distance, but the outsider, vigorously ridden by Chandler, got up in the last few strides to divide the honour with Te Hoia. Belle Star was two and a-half lengths away third, and then followed Sweet Whisper, Sports King, Grand Arch and Master Latour. Ruakura Stakes Oil King £849, Karapoti £657, were chief fancies for the two-year-old heat, with Wild Time £331. best backed of the others. Society Maid was first to btcomo prominent, followed by Tre- I metus, Oil King, Karapoto and Biddy's Boy. With a furlong covered Karapoti ! • ran to the lead and made play from j | Biddy's Boy, Lapstone, Society Maid, i Wild Time, Oil King and Tarcha, and this was the order as the field turned j Cor home. The leader was never j troubled and won easily from Full J Measure, who came fast at the finish , to cut Biddy's Boy out of second place 1 by a neck. Bells of Shandon was next. I followed by Tremetus, Thespis, British ' Princess and Society Maid. The second j horse paid just about double figures, ; carrying but £OS. Hamilton Handicap Prince Val, £863, was the elect of the Hamilton Handicap field with backers, but High Pitch £7BB and True Blood £645 had a lot of friends. Prince Val was first to break the line and led from the tapes followed by Flying Juliet, Black Maire and High Pitch, but leaving the straight Flying Juliet went to the lead from Black Maire. Prince Val, and Transformer with True Blood making a good run. The fav- ; ourite assumed command crossing the j top and turned for home slightly in j advance of Transformer. True Blood, , King Emerald (wide out), High Pitch ! and Black Maire. The favourite was hailed a winner, but with a great effort j True Blood got up in the last few . strides to secure a “nose” verdict. High ! Pitch was two and a-half lengths away, third, and then came King Emerald. Black Maire, Transformer and Flying Juliet. Tauwhare High-weight Sir Russell was favourite with £663. but there was good money for Lunette j £583, while Macroom £lls was at a; long price. Owairaka was the early leader from i Sir Russell, Gold Rain, Standfast. Ala- , croom and Lunette, but at’ the half mile j the favourite had taken charge and led ; into the straight from Gold Rain, Owairaka. Macroom and Lunette. In the. J race to the judge, Tinker on Lunette ; was disappointed in making a dash on the rails. The favourite hung on to : win by a length from the little-fancied Macroom, who had a similar advantage over Lunette. Then came Owai- j raka, AVenday. Hipo and Gold Rain* Waikato Hack Cup There was a big surprise in the ; Hack Cup, the winner being Luminary, j who carried only £7l and returned his i backers of over a third of a century. 1 Imperial Prince £613 and Kaha £416 i were the favourites. Valroe was badly left, and Storm Fiend led out from Luminary. Hakanoa and the favourite. At the halfmile post. Kawainga joined issue and with Luminary led across the top and into the straight from Kaha, Tuku. Storm Fiend and Unoco. A good : finish saw the outsider do best to win ' hy three-parts of a length from Kaha. with Storm Fiend a similar distance
;iw;-y third. followed by Hukanou. L'noco, Pompeius, Glenn Bay and Prince Imperial. Kirikiriroa Handicap Although it was not a really highclass Held of sprinters that contested this event, as is so often the case, the very evenness of the class ensured a thrilling' contest. Royal Doulton (JGS3SI. Mervette (£724) and Awarere 1 ( £ GTS) were the only horses seriously considered. Eager Rose (£196) being’ at a good double-figure quotation. Awarere led out from Takutama, True Blood. Lucy Rose. Kingfield, Mervette. and Eager Rose, with Mosque and | Royal Doulton last passing the five ; furlongs. At the half-mile the order was Awarere. Town Bird. Kingfield. i Takutama. Lucy Rose. Eager Rose, : Mervette and Royal Doulton. There was practically no alteration as they S approached the home stretch, and at I the distance there were half a dozen i horses almost in line. Mervette began I to assert herself, and she finally cap- , tured the stake by half a length. Eager i Rose was a neck in front of Awarere, I and right up were Lucy Rose, King- ! field. Royal Doulton and Mosque, with • Takutama and Town Bird at interi vals. Taupiri Hack ! Backers plumped strongly for Yolij mond in the concluding event, and she j wound up a big favourite. There was t plenty of money, too. for Whakama, : with the third fancy, Archieleen, at a ! nice price. The two favourites ran j themselves out, failing to see out the j journey at the pace they set. Wha- ! kama and Yolimond made play to the 1 half-mile, where Day Guide ran to the front. Into the home stretch Day | Guide, Yolimond and Whakama were ! almost in lino, Oscar and .Archieleen ; being just behind them. The latter : put in her claim at the distance and j got up to beat Whakama by a neck, \ Oscar being half a length" back n third place. Always finished on into i fourth place, and was followed over the line by Crown Arch and Dav : Guide. !
