DEVONPORT’S LIGHTING

COMMUNITY SYSTEM INTRODUCED SWITCHING-ON CEREMONY borough's latest innovation last evening when Victoria Hoad, the centre ui the shopping area, was illuminated for the first time under the new community lighting system. The current was switched on by the Mayor, Mr. A. E. Aldridge. Under the scheme, which was promoted by the Waitemata Chamber of Commerce, uniform electric lamps arc set under the verandahs of all shops in Victoria Hoad, and shopkeepers are individually responsible for the current used. The lamps are illuminated from sunset until II p.m. The front of the Waitemata Power Board's offices was gaily decorated with bunting and a large crowd assembled for the switching-on ceremony. Appropriate speeches were delivered by the Mayor, Mr. A. E. Aldridge. Mr. T. Walsh, chairman' of the Waitemata Chamber of Commerce, Mr. A. F2. Greensladc, Mayor of Xorthcote, and Messrs. S. E. Kennings, G. Trevithick and W. Marks, Devonport representatives on the Power Board.
