“SINGING” SOUND CAUSED

RADIO TELEPHONY HITCH IN AUSTRALIA TALKING TO LONDON Rued. 9.5 a.m. LONDON, Friday. The Australian and New Zealand Press Association gathers that if wireless telephony to Australia is shortly introduced it will be limited to speaking to a box in Sydney. It is explained that the present apparatus being used in Sydney allows an excess of waves. The current runs back along the outgoing circuit to England, creating a “singing,” which prevents switching to subscribers’ telephones, or connection with Melbourne. To overcome this, the British Telephone Department is building a duplicate of its valve switch gear, which is operated by the speaker’s voice. It shuts the return circuit and prevents the singing. It. will be at least four months before the apparatus is delivered in Sydney. It is understood that the British controllers hesitated to agree t.o an imperfect service, but it is understood they yielded to Australia’s desires.
